The usb floppy was so you could load your sata drivers.
I also think a VM with XP would work just fine as I have a machine shop setup like that.
You seem to know more than me (only 23 years IT here) so Ill let you take over.

      Yes, I understand this.

My problem there (for the third time at least now) isn't the lack of a floppy drive, it's the lack of floppy disks. This computer actually HAS a floppy drive in it, and even if it didn't I've got one laying around that I could throw at it.

It's not that I know more than you - I probably don't, in general - but the manufacturers of my software know more about it than you do. VMs have been tried. VMs do not work, when the host OS is 64-bit, and if the host OS is not 64-bit, then there's really no point.

What would you need to get you close to working? Floppies? I have a few boxes of unused 3.5". Need a working IDE drive? I have 3 spares. I actually understand why you can't do what everyone else is suggesting since I spent 10 years in a manufacturing environment supporting approximately 40 CNC's back in the early 2000's. If you need the disks I can send them to you.

Since you have a IDE CD-ROM drive why don't you burn the SATA drivers to a CD. Run the XP install, when you get to the point it asks for drivers eject the XP disc and insert the burned CD with SATA drivers and point the install prompt to the CD drive.

Then again....I think you said your XP disc is snapped into two pieces. LOL! Can't help you there.

So then why not follow my links and just make an Nlite disk? you can have a custom cd in about 2-3 hours if you have NOTHING right now.

THAT I can do. Shouldn't have missed that earlier ...

Funny thing is, I actually used Nlite about 5 years ago to make a custom XP deployment for a netbook.

slip steaming works(best probably) but so will a virtual floppy drive that actually works as a floppy during the xp install :-) there's a couple of ways to get around your problem just pick one.

You are going to have fun with Windows updates on XP right now... it seems they changed some things, so when you can't get updates by default to get you currect... upgrade to MS update (not Windows update) and see if that helps. You may have to upgrade the browser manually, and install SP2 manually, then you MIGHT get them, but make sure to enable auto-updates or M$ update doesn't seem to work on new installs these days without going through these steps. You may also have to register some stuff manually too.

I don't understand why there is no point in running a 32bit OS on 32bit hardware. "a very old Gateway E4300 / P4 3.2, running XP."

What is the problem with running Win7 32 and a 32bit VM for XP? XP Mode doesn't work?

XP Mode is just a VM host, and VM's have some issues with direct hardware access, especially serial ports on older software. I have that same problem right now with an ancient data retrieval system for a chart recorder system one of my clients uses. The chart recorders require the use of a convertor (proprietary and ancient too) that doesn't work with USB serial ports, wont work with a 64 bit OS, and won't work with a VM. We keep an old Win 2000 laptop (since that's the last OS it will run under) on site to communicate with them. They are part of a control system for something they don't have the money to replace, so we do what we have to.
