Another genre of PC games are called MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). You might have heard of the titles which are League of Legends and DoTA. There is also another MOBA called SMITE. All of them are F2P.

Maybe you know this but "http://www.twitch.tv/directory" is a place where people stream games they play so you can get a feel of the gameplay for popular PC games.

Download STEAM and pick and choose from there. Usually good deals for fun games under 10 bucks. Terraria is about 10 bucks and can easily burn days. Stay away from EA (Electronic Arts) or SOE (Sony Online Entertainment). If you want an MMO, I'd say just wait for WildStar which will be fantastic.

Steam sales are good times to buy games. Sometimes they have bundles on sale for cheap.

WOW is great but definitely time consuming. The monthly subscription fee isn't that bad since the game is kept up pretty good. You do need to have internet connection to play.

Bioshock is fun and you can pick that up for cheap nowadays. I couldn't get into Diablo III that much but it was good. Next up for me will be COD Ghosts when it goes on sale.

I just received my new gaming laptop as well. I ended up getting a Alienware 17 and love it. I had the Lenova Y510P which was great for the price but the edge is so sharp it drove me nuts. I returned it and ordered the Alienware instead. BTW you can get both from Costco.com and they have an excellent 3 year accidental damage coverage for only $99. Can't beat that anywhere else (I looked).

just as a rule of thumb its not ideal to buy "gaming" laptops from department stores. get one custom built. I know it sounds snarky but seriously. buying a gaming laptop from best buy is like saying I bought a diamond from walmart; rarely will you get something ACTUALLY of the quality that you are meant to be getting.

Really should not buy or brag about getting ANYTHING performance from crap buy. It is about as bad as going to the big red "F" store and buying a "performance" machine.

If you HAVE to spend that money, look on Fleabay for some rich kids last year toy his mommy and daddy bought him and now he is selling to get a quick fix from his local dd...

Else get one custom made by (ugg) alienware or Dell or someone that makes a performance laptop that works.

Or better yet, buy the parts and build a desktop yourself for the stuff and get a netbook or what not for school... Building your own gaming desktop and buying a cheap netbook for typing and crap will still allow you to come out ahead vs buying any "performance" laptop.

for all the people saying don't buy from best buy, alienware/dell have started selling their gaming gear inside best buy now for the past year or two.

and as for your last suggestion, you do know the OP is going to use this at school right? how is a gaming desktop sitting at home going to let him game while at school in between classes while on campus? is he going to have a teleportation machine?

Play RIFT, but like WOW it's a huge time suck, but it is fun.
