How do you delete ANYTHING? SOLVED

One thing I hate about data recovery is the back and forth of things that STICK to a HD and are a PITA to remove.

With that said, HOW do you delete ANYTHING?

    Example:

I just did a recovery job where I saved 168GB of data from a drive and migrated it to a newer drive.

Upon moving things, I found (using mini xp disk from hiren) that access was denied for some things. WTF? I thought minixp was linux and had no problems moving things. I tried to boot up with RIP linux and I could not figure out how to change drives or partitions with midnight commander so I gave up on that after a while. Yes, all partitions were mounted. I guess I need to read on midnight commander to learn how to use it. So anyways, I finally just decided to copy the old stuff and ended up putting it on the new HD. I had also installed Win7HP for them again and now that I have decided to make a second partition and move all of the rescued stuff to it as well as make a backup image of the C: (so that way I could then copy all of the stuff back over to the C: on top of what is there and see if windows can take it and repair itself to reboot and have their programs back) but damn if some of these stupid files are NOW telling me that I (as an administrator???) in the primary account can NOT delete or move some files (even though they are in a rescued folder and should not be in use) because I do not have permission?

This is where I say, MOTHER****ER WHO THE **** ARE YOU TO TELL ME THAT I DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO MOVE FILES ON MY OWN GODDAMN COMPUTER? **** YOU AND GET IT DONE OR I WILL FIND SOMEONE ELSE WHO CAN! I PUT THIS MOTHER****ER HERE AND I WILL DELETE IT SO DON'T BE TELLING ME THAT I DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION!

And that is my dilema. Is there ANY file or utility that can MOVE/DELETE ANY file and it does NOT give a damn about permissions? Like it would be cool if I needed this work done and I was able to log into a live medium build of Linux and tell it to move this file from here to there and not to give me any **** about it and it DOES IT without any fuss...

Does such a thing exist? Please share the link because Unlocker assistant and move on boot and other things have seemed to fail me in the past at one point or another and I am tired of seeing a folder named Windows~.Q on the C: that has nothing but some stupid securrom file in it...

Nuke your partition, make a new partition of a different type, then nuke that and make a new partition the way you want. Be sure to do full formats.

I would like the ability to do this NONDESTRUCTIVE as possible.

With that said, if I were to nuke and create a new partition of a different type (Cdisk made it a linux partition) adn then nuke that and make that new partition an NTFS and full format it, then install windows 7HP again and then I would be able to delete whatever I wanted to delete with no issues?

I am honestly ready to make an image of the C: but there are a few thigns that I do not want in the image. (Either gonna use Macrium reflect or Acronis). But what about some of these files on the other partition now?

I swear that I am not an idiot, but damn, these computers of today do not respond the way I want them to when I get in their face; they just seem cold and relaxed, like they are some kind of damn machine or something...

You're screwed to some extent then. Look up Sdelete.exe on Microsoft, that will help for SOME of it, you'll still have issues with file slack space which can be cleaned by other software.

I've always transferred things I needed from the drive then wiped the crap out of it.

It sounds to me like you want to wipe things completely off the drive you have now while retaining the things you want so you can make a clean image. Good luck with that.

What I would do is migrate the data I needed off, and then wipe the drive using a couple of different partitions. Then reinstall the OS, then put whatever I want back on it, then make the clean image.

Sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through for you, what kind of files are you trying to get rid of? Financial data and stuff?

Windows? Run command prompt as administrator. Use move and copy commands in command prompt. Done.

*nix? Run move and copy commands as root (via sudo or su to root). Or better yet, take ownership of the files and then delete them.

            WHA?????

PISHAW! I am gonna go see this for myself...

Oh yeah, BTW, there is one folder in particular that has the securrom stuff inside and when I try to delete it it tells me that the file can not be found, even though I am looking at it clearly on the screen. This is one of those little annoyances that irritate me the most. When I am looking at a file and winblows says it can not find it... WTF?

Well, a recursive delete of the dir in a root shell or equivalent should suffice.

WELL. So far the right clicking and running of CMD in windows 7 as Admin and then DEL the folder named DELME does NOTHING. It does not say that it did not get deleted, but it does not delete it. Still there.

Sucks cause I can change the name of the folder, but I just can NOT delete the file that is nested in it about 3-4 layers deep...

I do not know how to switch over to it via midnight commander once I am in RIP Linux. I mounted the drive, it showed it as mounted, but I did not see how to select it. Damn I wish Linux had a cool GUI explorer.exe file manager that I could use on a live disk to take care of things like this...

The last few versions of Knoppix LIVE CD/DVD copy files with Everyone Full Control if you make a new dir. I don't remember if the permissions are the same if the dir already existed.

Windows 7 sometimes cannot delete files and dirs that Win 7-actual copied...

Hell, Dell/HP OEM Win 7 Pro will not let a regular user write to a file in the root (C:\datafile.txt) that a user account created when they were a member of admin, if they are removed from admin later... half the time, even with Full Control NTFS permissions explicitly given, and others removed. This is even if the user is the owner of the file.

                  Pear Linux at work now...

What does "Everyone Full Control" mean?

Do you mean global read/write/excute? Even then, that doesn't translate to what I would even call "full control" since that would imply the ability to delegate user and group ownership on that file, which you can't give to 'everyone'.

Hmmm, I never thought to look at the owner after copying a file from the Knoppix Live CD as I never had an issue and the copy was always temporary, but permissions can clearly be Everyone - Full Control (I am having an issue dropping screen-scrapes from Linux, still a learning curve).

I was referring to two permission issues, that I have seen or worked around:

I will take ownership but I think it might do the same thing since winblows is telling me that it seems to NOT be able to uhhhhh, FIND the file... (WTF?) even though it is nested about 4 folders deep... I guess it thinks that
I can not see it on the screen. I grabbed the lastest live Knoppix, I think it is like v 6.7 or something.

                          7.2: ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/knoppix-dvd...3-06-16-EN.iso...

You may need to remove inherited permissions, and apply to sub... if you have any issues, but that is on Pro. Don't get me started on Starter, or Home edition issues with getting files.

Try adding /F and attrib -R to your delete commands and see if that helps.

I've ran into this problem before, certain files got locked and I couldn't change ownership and delete them even though I'm the administrator on my computer.

Oddly enough, the solution I used was to boot up Windows in Safe Mode. Once in this mode, I've found that I can delete those problematic files.
