Power Supply Question

Corsair is not a crappy brand, they have low end and high end models of course. With only a 430gtx videocard, I wouldn't even bother above a 500 watt power supply.

Frankly, if you've gone through 2 power supplies in less than a year, it's time to get a line conditioning UPS. Crappy power from the wall will cause power supplies to crap out, PC power supplies are sensitive to this, and considering that a 1300va UPS isn't exactly super expensive these days, there is no reason not to have one.

SeaSonic makes the higher end Corsairs for Corsair. I only use Corsair.

Just get a $50ish Thermaltake with (Active or passive) PFC, and run a UPS.

The drawback with a UPS is power draw. They typically use the full power to keep the power up, and battery charged.

The issue is crappy p/Supplies (and possibly bad formula caps, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague, it is still around), and bad power from the grid. A UPS will prevent this. I use even $20 P/Supplies on one-trick-ponies and have lost none running on a UPS (if plugged into a UPS from the start).

On the Thermaltake's, I have only had about a 5% failure, with hundreds deployed, and they just replace them with a pretty easy RMA when it does happen. I have used some for like 5-6 years+ at work with NO UPS.

Either way if you are not planning on getting a UPS, verify that it has Active PFC.

With a UPS if your router/cable modem etc is on the UPS your wireless can continue to work even in a power failure too, and less (modem/router) reboots because of clean power.

If you use a UPS with an active PFC PSU you have to get one that uses a pure sine wave or you will run into problems.

Never had a problem, but never looked past "PFC" (Active or Passive) and have not had any problems with server grade (used, and assumed to be Active PFC), or regular P/Supplies on my cheapie UPSs.
