DD-WRT is very easy to upload to a wrt54g you could aways use YouTube.

i'm running dd-wrt on my wrt54g. pretty easy. if you have to, download youtube video but the upgrade is pretty explanatory. quite a bit of menus but it's very easy to navigate. don't need to go all that deep just to setup wpa encryption.

but if op is not comfy with that, yeah, stick to the regular firmware that came with it. to me, that firmware is not really all that stable. i hardly ever had to re-restart my router once i put dd-wrt in it. it's been working for 3+ years I think?
