    People stealing wireless internet

Typical, I don't care but now that we got rid of cable, we need all the banwidth we can get. I have been noticing our modem is in use when all of our internet capable items are shut off... We don't run a wep key (Yeah I know it's dunb, but our router is funky and won't acknowledge anything when its turned on).

How can I find out who is using it? I remember a thread on CGN about a year ago and another gunner had the same problem. He was able to email the Delta Bravo and tell him to knock it off.

Any suggests besides get a new router??

Limit access by MAC address. Or, you can turn down power and limit access. Turn off the broadcast of your network ID--making it harder to find your network.

There are various wifi sniffer programs that will allow you to see activity and other info, but why not do what I do and activate MAC address filtering on your router, no password required and it's fairly hard to crack unless you really know hat you're doing with a sniffer program.

in your modem you can (read should) be able to go in an look at the the ip addresses assigned. If you go to your network neighborhood (assuming windows pc) you can find all the shares of the people who connected to your network. Try and view their PCs.
Really, there's not much you can do to track 'em down, most likely your immediate neighbors since the router doesn't go too far.
Remember, if you have an open network you are setting yourself up for some bad stuff! If I email obama and say I'm gonna do some bad stuff can you guess who's IP address it comes back to?

That's very true... I know it's just wishful thinking, but I would love to post a semi nude picture on their desktop of the Hoff with pupies laying around him... I know its out there because everytime this guy leaves his desk top up at work, someone is posting that or enrique!!!

I think I will have to buy a new router then... It is pretty old (2004 I think).

Uhhhhh if your modem is jacked up and you cant secure it, go buy a new modem

You NEED to have it secured.

People look for wireless connections so they can get on to do illegal stuff, surf child porn sites, download, sell child porn. and do other illegal activities.

If those activities are tracked, all the authorities will know is it came from your system. Then good luck proving it wasn't you and someone was just hacking into your network.

If you dont want to use any kind of password security, then at least limit it to MAC address. Mine is setup for both. only computers with specific MAC address can access my network AND they need a pass phrase.

Seriously, I work in the computer security field. don't run wireless without securing it. you could set yourself up for some big problems.

The most you could do is see the persons computer name and their assigned IP address. You might be able to use the persons assigned UP address to hack into their computer "maybe".

As far as anything else, you would need a port sniffer. Like maybe snort.

If you know what you are doing, you can capture the packets, piece them together and by using this you can get any information the person sends over the connection. You might get lucky and get the persons email address s (and a lot more) that way.

But this is a good example of what you want a secure network. someone could tap into your network, run the same tool. I could grab all your data packets. anything that was sent unencrypted is sent in clear text and I could get all of it.

Most peoples emails by default are set for clear text passwords and not encrypted.

And most people use the same password for everything, or variations of it. so if someone grabs your email password, they have something to work with to try and hack your bank accounts (which they will know any online banking you do)

              Good luck

Well the good thing is, we run encriptions on all passwords, and change them religously. I may try that port sniffer tonight...Payday is tomorrow, and I will be getting a new router.

Yeah, we don't need that... I know we would be cleared the second they scanned our computer, but why go through the hassle of having my houses salid tossed!

Get a new wireless router and lock that security down. WEP's better than nothing but not much better than nothing. WPA is your friend.

I turn off SSID broadcast, lock it down with WPA2 (change the keys every 2 months or so), and that should do it.

WPA2 plus AES plus 14 or more character in the passphrase.

Holy crap, I never thought of that as a reason to secure my wireless. I need to go make sure my mom has hers protected.
