About this thread. Look, your wifi is unsecured. If you don't want people on it, secure it. Chasing down people who are using your unsecured wifi is kind of silly for you, it's a waste of your time and energy.

I guess it depends on what you were using before. But your downstream connection from your ISP is what it is, getting a new router won't increase that.

Plug your computer into the router, and test the speed. You will not get a faster connection than what you get with wired.

Old router plugged into the router I would get 9 mbps tops.

New router plugged in or wireless I get 18+ mbps.

My old netgear router was restricting my connection. My netgear router needed to be reset up to 10 times daily. It wouldn't function smoothly with the windows 7 OS.

Typical, I don't care but now that we got rid of cable, we need all the banwidth we can get. I have been noticing our modem is in use when all of our internet capable items are shut off... We don't run a wep key (Yeah I know it's dunb, but our router is funky and won't acknowledge anything when its turned on).

How can I find out who is using it? I remember a thread on CGN about a year ago and another gunner had the same problem. He was able to email the Delta Bravo and tell him to knock it off.

Any suggests besides get a new router??

It's not like someone is breaking into your house and stealing what you're paying for. You've left your stuff outside, on the sidewalk, unattended and with a sign on it that says "FREE STUFF, TAKE IT".

for some ideas re what to do with people who steal your wifi.

Hiding the SSID is not a bad idea but not going to help with anyone who's trying even a little bit. Similarly, MAC address limits just force them to clone your MAC address if they want to steal your wifi.

Both of those will work against honest people who connect by mistake, or simple/naiive people; they're wildly inadequate against a determined leech.

Use WPA or WPA2 with a key that doesn't come from a dictionary word.

The Linksys WRT54GL is a great cheap router that can be flashed with third party firmware (like Tomato, my favorite) and it'll run for months or years without interruption or hassle.

It's unrealistic to expect free, competent, English-speaking tech support for any product that costs $60 retail. Get over it.

Sometimes people won't take stuff that says free. You have to put $25 OBO and leave it outside overnight, it will be gone in the morning.

But unsecured wifi on the other hand....Everyone knows the value of unsecured wifi. lol. I once built a home network off a Linksys wrt54g with DDWRT I had set up in a repeater bridge. Used it to download music and play Xbox on until I got connected at home.

Ahh guess what... I have been trying to secure my network ever since I posted this... My Laptop barely recognizes my router. I have a co worker who is good at this and is going to try and help me.

You have a link to tomato firmware? I have only used DD-WRT Mega Pack and been pretty happy with it.

Tomato is at http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato/ - I have it running on a WRT at my mother in law's house, at home, and at the office - about once a year I upgrade to the newest firmware, other than that it just runs without problem, which is more than I can say for any of the stock firmware in just about any other SOHO router I've purchased.
