Spend the extra money, and get a mac. you will never again need to waste time or money on running AV software ever again.
I don't like steve Job's turtlenecks either, but the Mac OS is far superior to anything Microsoft will ever come up with.

First of all, Apple didn't "come up" with OSX. They designed a GUI for BSD.

Second, exploits for OSX and Linux do actually exist, and are becoming more and more of a problem.

Third, if Apple had half the marketshare Microsoft does, you'd see just as many exploits. Apple's operating system is not the slightest bit more secure than Windows(actually their Safari browser has had some serious issues lately that not even IE has), the people looking for exploits and writing code to take advantage of it are simply lazy and would rather focus their efforts on the giant with a bullseye on it's back(Microsoft), however that leads to a false sense of security and when OSX issues have been found they seemingly take longer to get fixed by Apple.

Fourth, if you really think that "most of our information networks" are running Windows, you've just shown how lacking your knowledge about the subject even is. In that particular usage setting, you're going to start finding Linux and Unix distros, IOS(that doesn't stand for "iphone os" like people seem to think it does...), and all sorts of systems that would be considered obscure to even most business users. When you see a windows taskbar sitting on a screen, that could very well be just for a client running software to communicate with a backend that's actually doing the work.

Hope you're not running that MAC unprotected...

I run Intego's software anti-virus and firewall on the MAC. Hardware fireware is with a ZyXel P1 Anti-Virus/Intrusion detection and a ZyXel 2 Content Filter for my protection. Even with a small market share, there are those trying to infect you. When support on the P1 ends in 2012, we'll probably switch to one of Netgear's UTM family of hardware firewall/anti-virus/content filter.

ESET had an ad in Computerworld magazine for their new MAC anti-virus product. Someone must be buying the anti-virus for the MAC, other than my friends and I.

Lol I hope you know the reason macs don't have viruses is because they only control about 6% of the market..

If you were a hacker/phisher would you want to spend your time writing viruses for a 6% market share!??

          LOL

Contrary to some previous posts, the Mac OS X is a more secure OS than Windows or Linux. I arranged for presentations by one of the few (7 at that time) computer specialists at the FBI. Not an IT guy, he was a special agent with a Computer Science Masters degree. Joined the FBI from a major tech corporation just after 9-11. Anyway, he had just returned to being a Mac user after a few years forced to use Win. He explained that Mac was far more secure than the PC. Ironically, LEO does not like Macs, especially when used by the criminal. The Canadian Royal Mounted Police are apparently the Mac experts for LEO in North America. A few months later, the FBI guy called me asking if I knew anyone who wanted to buy the 5-month old Mac he bought himself. I asked him why he was selling. He replied that the FBI was buying one for him!

I arranged a presentation by ESET a few months ago for their just-released Mac security software. While they said that Mac was more secure inherently, they pointed out something new. It seems that while the percentage of Macs in business is about 8% (25% for consumers, 40% for students, according to NewApplications), hackers have figured out that the average Mac user has more money than the average PC user. The richer target, though less popular, is putting the Mac on the virus-builder's radar. It is to everyone's advantage to keep their computers protected, Mac, PC or Linux.

More secure than linux? But linux is based on permissions. I have a hard time believing that a virus can just give itself root permission, without the user being dumb and installing it themselves... that is the main folly of windows, its too user friendly, and allows third party garbage to do basically whatever it wants... but I guess anything is possible.

Plus everybody knows that penguins don't have any money.

OS X is also permission-based. In order to install anything, the OS requires admin account authorization.

Mac hacked in under 10 seconds at PWN2OWN

Claiming a Mac is more secure than a PC. Is like claiming a Yugo is more secure than a Accord. It's Not, just no one wants to break into a Yugo. Where as an Accord is a very popular vehicle so its easy to make a profit off of it.

Are better off owning a Mac, sure if you're afraid of viruses. Just like if you own a Yugo you probably don't have to worry about anyone stealing it.

So, would you agree that the statement that mac is more secure than linux is not necessarily true?

What makes the mac more secure than linux? Not starting a debate, just curious.

The Norton that Comcast gives away works great. Not slow, thinks ahead, not intrusive.........unlike my previous experience with them.

I would love to switch to Apple, because I want to pay 2x-3x more for hardware, and not be able to run my big boy programs, but I just can't pull the trigger.

There's never ever ever been a unix or linux exploit giving an attacker root access

Claiming OSX is more secure than anything else is just deluding yourself. Again, there are fewer people looking for exploits for OSX because it's marketshare is so minimal, that does not mean that no one finds exploits, and the reality is some of the "better" folks have specifically attacked OSX just because of the silly public mindset that it's somehow "more secure".

If our federal government switched to OSX, you bet your *** China would devote some more engineers to writing virii specific for OSX and finding exploits in the OS. As sepiid said, security through obscurity is not true security. It is an absolutely terrible false sense of security that will lead to problems due to complacency.
