Seems Win 11 will require TPM 2.0. My mobo has a socket for the TPM board but the board is out of stock. Guess I will run Win 10 until end of life. Then get new mobo.

Noice! I've got a T400 and might try a modern GUI Distro on one of these with RAM maxed out and an SSD., again.
I don't really need a laptop anymore, as my tablet handles all pr0nhubz and web browsing I need, but it'd be nice once I start working from home in a free-state, and I might have extra time...

My T400 runs Linux Mint just fine. 8gb/RAM, and a 500gb Samsung EVO 860 SSD.

My "DD" is a Lenovo W540/i7-4900mq/nVidia K2100m/32gb RAM, and 2x1tb Samsung 860 EVO SSD's, and a 480gb M.2 NGFF drive.

Linux is a waste of the machine, as the graphics, and gaming ability of the machine, far outstrips what's available for Linux. I run Win7Pro on this machine with absolutely ZERO issues. I don't understand why people dumped Win7. It's still fantastic.

You have plenty of time, upgrade to W11 won't be available till 2022, only new rigs will get it in 2021.

Scalpers bought all the modules up the first day it was announced that you would need TPM. 5 to 10 buck modules are going for over a hundred bucks on ebay. Being in the windows insider program I was all set to try out win 11. I have a ryzen 7 chip and my overall system is less then 2 years old.

After running the health check it said it would not install due to me not running secure boot. In order to run it I need to convert my main drive from MBR to GUID. it just doesn't seem worth it at this point.

On reddit the problems with upgrading are just getting crazy. people with brand new top of the line PC's are getting the will not install message.

I see a big uprising and MS backing down. Or a huge number of machine going to the deadline of 10/14/25

I looked at MSI and ASUS mobo that support the latest Intel CPUs. None of them have a TPM chip. Just a header for a daughter board. And the MSI site did not list a TPM card as an accessory for the mobo.

It makes sense to give up on Windows 10 since Microsoft never seemed to be able to work the bugs out of it.

Don't need tpm chip. For Windows 11 supported CPUs 3 years or newer, it is enabled in bios and is not a separate chip.
For Intel its called the "Intel PTT" which you set to enabled. For AMD it would be "AMD PSP fTPM".

They say security, but they won't require it for some markets, i.e. Russia. and as far as I can tell corporate.

Yup or Macrium freeware if you don't like the Windows 7 backup. I won't do a backup in the cloud.

No thanks, I'll stick with my GNU/Linux distros, generally Debian these days. Debian not only is easy to run, easy to upgrade, but much more efficient with the resources. And LibreOffice kicks any version of Microsoft Office, *ESPECIALLY* O365, in the gonads for actual usability.

I upgraded an older couple from MS Windoze to Debian, and they were remarkably impressed with how easy Debian is to use.

Similar good things can be said for the Ubuntu variants; they're good, too, and I'm typing this right now on the Ubuntu box.

Microsoft? No, thanks, not on any computers that I own. No more.
