5G is not a done deal because Verizon engineers need to inspect the physical plant before implementation, but from what I understand about 5G radio wave propagation, it should work for most of the school. The school could also serve as a base for Verizon 5G implementation for the surrounding neighborhood and businesses.

If I have 5G at work, I'm sure I'll want to have 5G elsewhere as well.

There are a few different things happening with 5G via towers/availability and then your hardware, the iphone 12 or whatever 5G device you are running.

My understanding is that 5G, like 4G was, will not be prevalent enough to rely on for a few years. The implementation of converting the nations towers to 5G is a multi-billion dollar endeavor. Surely involving bids, contracts, lawyers, permits etc...when 4G first rolled out, they pumped the marketing just like they are doing now at its inception. They want people to be excited about spending new money on a new product. Thats tech marketing 101, who wants to buy a slight upgrade? Not the general public.

Now as far as the hardware goes, your smartphone. The iPhone 12 Pro will give you the option to toggle 5G on and off manually. Also, it will turn off 5G in order to conserve battery life. 5G being much faster, will in turn demand much more power from a given device.

The big takeaway from this thread was the trade in opportunities for the 12 Pro. I have done the math and if you are planning on staying with your carrier for the next 2 years, upgrading to the 12 pro now is a no-brainer. Perhaps they will have even better incentives in the months to come. However, maybe not. The reason being, every carrier wants your current iphone 11 so they can refurbish it and sell it before the holiday season. The 1st of the year tends to be the time when your iphone loses value the most, as everyone has upgraded by Christmas, and older phones flood the market.

        Upgrading from iPhone 7plus.

Willing to pay the extra $100 for the 5G capability (even if the ATT coverage is spotty in SoCal).
Even if 5G is spotty in SoCal now, you won’t be missing out on 5G more so than anyone else. I presume San Francisco and Los Angeles to have the most 5G network availability now, and in the future.

Whats your issue Tiger? I may be able to help. I also upgraded from the iPhone X, the incentives are too lucrative not to. *this is the lie I tell myself to get a new phone

My phone stuck in Apple logo screen for no reason. I spend all night to factory reset, and downgrading ISO. Some how I fixed in the end, but I lost all my pictures and files. I rather trade in, in case stuck in logo again.

Your phone froze...any computer can do this. I suggest doing a restart next time that happens. If you were able to do a factory reset, then you must have got working. My iPhone X is 85% of what is was brand new. So I think it has about 4-5 years of viable life left. However, I personally want that new camera system. I take a lot of photos and videos. 5G is an interesting bonus that I haven’t really thought of because I don’t live in a major urban area. Did you get the 12 pro, or are you waiting on the mini or pro max?

              All valid points. Decisions, Decisions..

I was do some reading over the in the Apple subreddit. Sounds like Apple is developing the next gen iPhone with a better 5G modem. So I may just wait for that and hopefully the 5G around that time will be more solid on all bands with better coverage.

My iphone 12 pro came today. Great camera. I took this photo in the dark. There was a tiny bit of light from the hallway, but my iPhone X produced a black out picture, no image. During slow exposure used a laser pen for effect.

Probably going to upgrade from an iPhone 8 to iPhone Xr depending on cost.
The 5G is the only appeal for the upgrade, but the infrastructure is not in place.

Mt decision to upgrade is based that my daughter needs a “new” phone, so she gets my old one and I get the upgrade.

Me also. It's 3 y/o this past March and still going strong. I do all the IOS and software updates as they roll out.

I don't see any reason to spend a grand on a new phone right now. YMMV.

As I said, my i7+ works exactly the same as the day I bought it. I notice zero difference in it's performance. When it starts going wonky on me, then I'll get a new phone.
