Good Quality Ethernet Cable for 75' run?

I've seen 10bT Ethernet run over BARB WIRE. The protocol is amazingly bulletproof. 75 feet is a short run, and 12mb/s is dead slow. you can get away with the cheapest cable you can find, or learn to crimp your own ends (it's not hard).

Plenum-rated cable is, if I remember right, a fire-related certification: it won't poison you if you burn it... it comes from office complexes where the cable is run (by the hundreds or thousands) through A/C return above ceiling tiles. If you aren't doing that, it's not worth the money.

Also, while your download speed might be 12mb/s, your hardware will likely run at 100mb/s or Gig, so you'll be using a tiny fraction of your LAN's capabilities. (This isn't unusual or unexpected). Thus, even less concerns about needing ultra-high quality cable.

Same here, but I got the remainder of a solid copper Cat 5 spool I got gratis during a cleanup of a facility we took over.
Cat5 runs gigabit fine for most runs I have seen with Cat 5 solid, unless a really long run.

For 75'-100' runs... use whatever. For longer runs, get solid copper rolls, and maybe roll your own.

Home Depot used to have cable for dirt cheap. That was my secret place to go for even pre made patch cables. Nowdays they are overpriced... go figure.

When it comes to Ethernet cable, for the most part copper is copper. You won't notice any difference between different brands, other than color and connector type (boot vs no boot), and sometimes thickness. Other than that, the only difference is the amount of money the manufacturers are able to collect from the suckers who think a name brand cable is somehow superior. I've been in IT many years and ran my share of cable, solid, stranded, plenum, STP, you name it. They all perform at the standard Ethernet performance level.

I've bought brand name cables and the cheapest no name brand cables from Newegg and Amazon and they all work the same. Monoprice cables are good enough, you won't be disappointed.

Monster Cable should be a well known example. The best at hype marketing speaker wire.

FYI I used 100 ft of Home Depot cat5 and it's still 30 Mbps no problem.

Thanks - that seems like excellent quality but would that be overkill considering my paltry 12mbps connection? Was looking at Monoprice at this cable - would that be a good choice? Also, is Shielding a big deal when choosing a cable?

Monoprice has good quality items and a lifetime warranty. You may want to get the 100' version if you are running it 75'. Never hurts to have extra for those turns and routes around doors, etc. Unless you have already added extra room for the run in the original 75' estimate.
