Spybot search and destroy, by safer networking. Try that it finds high jackers and all kinds of stuff.

If you have antivirus run a scan. Boot scan if possible.

Run Windows defender only, if you have any other antivirus get rid of it, most of the time they are the problem.

ccleaner free was hacked so make sure you have a very new version

Avast free antivirus is great. Has the boot scan option.

I don't see how or why a browser hijacker would set your search engine to yahoo.com. Does it redirect you when you try to search? A browser hijacker will usually redirect you when you try to go to antivirus websites to download a scanner. If you're able to go to bleepingcomputer.com, then you most likely do not have a browser hijacker.

Have you tried removing yahoo search engine from the search settings in firefox?

No research needed I've been using it for over 8 years maybe 10, and have had excellent result. Pc magazine has it listed first on its top free antivirus software list.

Check your Uninstaller list for any weird toolbars that may have installed themselves or questionable programs.

Many free apps are now loaded with 'ad ware'...
if you select 'standard install' it will slip something past you, like Yahoo tool bar & the ilk

When ever you install a free app (theres tons of good ones that used to work fine) select "Custom Install"..
it will show you check marked boxes of the crap ad ware, you uncheck all but the bare minimum to run the free app.

Do you remember the 12 virii/trojan that PC world tested each software against, or the criteria for their tests? What are the strengths/weaknesses of each product, and how do you rate avast free to the "competition?"
