Uninstalled recent programs but Yahoo virus still

Look online for a utility called "hijack this". It does a fairly good job of cleaning out browser hijacking malware. Worse comes to worse, find someone who's familiar with cleaning up this kind of thing. I used to work in IT and got really familiar with cleaning malware when it first started hitting the computing world. It can get real messy depending on your computer habits. I'm sure there are other IT pros who have a good deal of experience with this crap.

I don't see how or why a browser hijacker would set your search engine to yahoo.com. Does it redirect you when you try to search? A browser hijacker will usually redirect you when you try to go to antivirus websites to download a scanner. If you're able to go to bleepingcomputer.com, then you most likely do not have a browser hijacker.

Have you tried removing yahoo search engine from the search settings in firefox?

Delete all and reinstall fresh copy of windows.

I keep all of my files on an external HDD & reload Windows frequently.
You can dL Win 7 for free & it will automatically activate as your OEM install.
There is great benefit to performing a fresh install ...at least 2x a year.
If you're not a power user & dont care,
then keep chugging along....

ps, I havent had an anti virus program for 6 years...its a bunch of resource hog BS.

The biggest problem is to find it.

Google in a general search engine.

Many others are sales driven search engines and will send you to sites selling things first. the last one that hit my computer was in a driver download from best buy after i bought a special cable from them.

i chew them out big time and had them remove the malware for free.

you have to watch any downloaded from the internet and many have a box you can check or uncheck to stop these malware downloads.
the problem is some have you check the box if you don't want the down load and others you have to uncheck the box.
and the sites do not tell you what will stop the download.

the best way i have found to stop this malware in to sandbox it.

Ive had similar issue before and its all over the WWW about people getting hijacked to Yahoo (mostly).

(iirc some people were getting hijacked to Bing but Bing-jacker didn't disable standard correction in Firefox)

I doubt yahoo is the mastermind behind the malware on your computer. It is either one of those ad injection malware where it is redirecting you to yahoo with malicious ads injected onto the search page or redirecting you to yahoo with a 3rd party ad-on smoke screened in with yahoo.

OP, this reply is right on the money. The problem with removing this type of malware is that they often install not only a core browser hijacker, they also install a tool to detect your uninstall efforts and reinstall the malware as soon as you finish removing it. Often the best solution is to backup your data, reformat the drive, and reinstall Windows. It's a ton of work. Good luck.

hijacking my searches in Firefox.

Default and Homepage are set to Google, but Yahoo keeps popping up.

Why is Yahoo the only search that hijacks and why can't a big outfit like Google keep ahead of them and release easy fix for everyone as a public service?

It's not always that simple. I can do it because I know what to look for. Generally, it's going to be a string of items that has a gibberish file name. And they tend to be all over the place, sometimes in the registry, sometimes in the windows system32 folder and still other times there will be suspect files/folders in the AppData folder under your windows profile. I doubt there's any online tutorials.

I concur. Too complicated to explain, especially, if your mucking around in the registry. I'm comfortable with it, but I wouldn't be comfortable explaining it to someone, unless I was looking right over their shoulder.
