Staples as great deals on refurb/off lease units. The one I am using is 5+ years old and well worth the $135 spent on it. They come with new keyboards and mice but NO monitor.

It's a route to consider. The performance/cost of mobile devices is about par with desktops these days. Even if you plan to never move it, it's less clutter and you essentially have a built-in battery backup for power failures, etc. The only down side is serviceability is more limited.

I'm currently running a Dell XPS 15 with 32gb of memory, 512GB of nvme SSD storage and GTX 1050 video card (Nerd speak for it's faster and more capable than a lot of desktops).
That's what I do. I have a couple Lenovo P50's that I run CAD with for two clients. nVidia M2000M video cards, nice powerful processor, 64 GB of ram and I use my old 30" Apple Cinema display with an Dual DVI adapter that allows me to toggle between the PC's and an older Apple tower. The 2560 x 1600 resolution is great.

I seldom go with online stores in terms of purchasing computers and gadgets unless the store is legit and popular. I always consider buying at the malls and other establishments so that I can even get some freebies and can easily exchange or return it when I found out that it is defective.

Unless you're handy with computers, I don't have much advice. Chromebooks are a waste of money, unless you're working on group projects on the "cloud", or surfing the web ONLY.

I buy broken Lenovo laptops from Ebay, and rebuild them. I usually have less than $200, and a little time invested in any one of them. Never have any issues with them.

I get most of my computers from Costco. The extended warranty and the no BS returns make it worth it to me. I quit using desktop computers many years ago and just use laptops and tablets now.

I normally keep them until they rust out.... 4-7 years and replace...

The last one had 6Gb of ram.... I did not need that when I got it, but I understand everything gets larger over time....

Costco has a basic dell for $600

              12 GB of ram
4 year warranty included if you use your Costco visa....

              Not a screaming deal....
Rust out? Are you living on a boat? lol

$600 is pretty good for an i5 and 12gb but I would recommend building one if you have the time. Or find someone close to you here that can build one. Anyways, longest I had a computer was 12 years running windows 98 until 2010. Still ran like a champ but was reeeeeeally old. Comps shouldnt rust after any amount of years unless you live in a very moist environment or are working out on your backyard porch or something

My first one I bought, at Sears I believe, in 1983, a Ti99-4a. Next one, a PowerPC 7100-66, I bought from an independent computer dealer in 1994. After that, I believe every computer I've purchased, a bit over a dozen in total for both business and personal use, were bought on eBay, including the MacBook Pro this is being typed on.

Save for one LCD iMac that the capacitors went bad and I couldn't fix (I tried) and one CRT iMac that lost its analog board and one iBook that failed after a couple years, all are still functioning or can power up and function, even that old 7100/66 in the shop which is also running an early Windows processor on a card.

The newer stuff IMO isn't nearly as robust as the old stuff. Of course it's far cheaper, relatively speaking.

Micro Center or Fry's for parts, pit one against the other for price matching, throw in some NewEgg deals, and build your own!

If you just need to work on office documents and use the internet, look online at micro center and frys for some refurbished computers. They come with a clean windows install and no BS software. All my computers at the office for these purposes are all $60 refurbs and work great. When something is wrong with one, we just throw it away and get another from the closet, its cheaper than having an IT guy fix it.

I wouldn't buy dog food from Fry's. I know too many people who worked there. Unless they've changed, I wouldn't.

I buy all my parts off Ebay and build my own. 99% satisfaction, very few issues, awesome builds!
