I have liked and used Newegg.com or Tigerdirect.com.
I tend to build my own from components.

What are you doing with it? For work I use a 3D CAD program along with numerous other usual business software programs that are on at the same time. So I bought a "make to order" workstation from Digital Storm.

Second the digital storm idea. Ya, I prob pay 1-200 more but I don't have the time nor patience to fiddle with stuff like that. I'm on my second DS unit and the first one still works after 7 trouble free years.

I transitioned full time to a laptop. Meaning, I use it as a desktop computer as well as mobile. When using it as a desktop I dock it to an external monitor and keyboard/mouse/ethernet

It's a route to consider. The performance/cost of mobile devices is about par with desktops these days. Even if you plan to never move it, it's less clutter and you essentially have a built-in battery backup for power failures, etc. The only down side is serviceability is more limited.

I'm currently running a Dell XPS 15 with 32gb of memory, 512GB of nvme SSD storage and GTX 1050 video card (Nerd speak for it's faster and more capable than a lot of desktops).

I'm in the same boat I've completely abandoned staying current with computer stuff and am following this closely

I like the two monitors set up at work with the laptop docked how complicated is that

Been happy with off-lease desktops and laptops I've bought from arrowdirect.com for parents and other relatives who did not need the latest and greatest.

I will be honest, when I have had to deal with computers, like for a company, I have gone to Microcenter. http://www.microcenter.com/search/se...ortby=pricelow They have EXCELLENT deals on refurbished towers running Windows 7 Pro x64. I have found a few sellers on Ebay as well AND I got a damn good deal @$225 for a refurbed Dell Optiplex with 8GB of RAM and i5 CPU with 1TB HD. NO COMPLAINTS and it runs great, plus I was able to flip it for $800 after I added a 24" Monitor, replaced HDD with 500GB HDD and 1 SSD and added a USB 3.0 card.

But Microcenter has some REALLY good deals. It is a short 40 minute drive down to Tustin for me. They show 7 models with Windows 7 x64 and they start at $139.99

AND, if your PSU died, then I would either goto Ebay and look for a new lightly used decent model like an Enermax or other brand, maybe cooler master (meh) or Corsair and drop about $65+ or goto Microcenter or New Egg and get a new PSU for about $50+ - I would see what higher priced model is on sale and then buy for an $80 model actually... If it is just a desktop- MAybe look for an 80+ bronze or better modular if possible or at least a 600W.

It is NEVER time to replace a PC. It is ONLY time to UPGRADE it, only MACS need to be replaced. But this aint a MAC thread so piss on them for being inserted here...

You' don't require a lot of computing power for that. You sure you don't want a laptop or a Chromebook?

You could use a Raspberry Pi 3 as basic computer replacement. The Pi 3 costs $36.

Scroll down a bit in the Amazon page and there's a link for the Pi 3 with the power supply and SD card that costs $60. The default Raspbian OS is Debian Linux derived, but you can install any distro you want. I read somewhere there's a special version of Windows that can run.

I have the first gen Raspberry Pi 1 when it came out 2012. I use it as media center. The Pi 3 is pretty good as a basic desktop replacement.

A Chromebook would be a good choice but I do believe Office is web-based, so keep that in mind.

You definitely dont need a lot of power so a $500 or less laptop would be more than enough. Chromebook would be much less but be aware of there limitations.

                              Tigerdirect is a great resource.
