WTH! Windows 10 no notice restart/update

I was surfing the internet this AM and my screen went blue with a "restarting" message.

No prior warning or notice that I saw.

It took more than 10 minutes after restarting to update and reconfigure.

Then it returns to the blue screen with "We've updated your PC"

DUH!!!

Then a second message: "all of your files are exactly where you left them"

The message just stays up for more than a minute.

OK, that's just creepy!

Then there was a message about exiting new features and the login screen comes up.

WTH Microsoft!!!

Is your machine set in the Fast Ring for updates? The is the behavior if so.

Lot's and lot's of complaints about MS10. Some have to do with collection of personal information and it's use. Some say the Feds are up to their eyeballs in MS10, not a good thing.

You can turn the telemetry data off. It's not collecting anymore than your smartphone does already.

That certainly came to mind when I read the "your files are where you left them" line.

All this means is that the hardlinks to the data of your OS drive has persisted. The representation and organization of the files are virtually unchanged. During the upgrade your data is shuffled on the drive while the OS is laid down cleanly.

I have several systems still running XP. Why change if the purpose is served?

How about windows 3.1 ?

If that system is online, you're very brave for running such a vulnerable OS.

Security through obscurity will only last so long. Don't deceive yourself, you're running a vulnerable system and it only takes one browser plugin, download, app to sink the XP ship and propagate out to the others. Firewalls and VPN after nothing to a click-happy user. Good luck!

I agree and don't believe in it.

These are closed systems without other users. There isn't even physical access to most of them. They facilitate certain proprietary services.

As far as click happy users they can tank a modern updated OS with included security software pretty much at will as most malware today is massively advanced.

At least they're air gapped. Sometimes we can't prevent the OS, especially on embedded instrument systems or oscilloscopes. Boy would they make me nervous though! [emoji6]

I hear ya but I am pretty comfortable as I have been doing this for over 34 years.

Remember the days of early xmodem, ymodem zmodem bbs etc...?

Our first air gap was sneaker net supported. Total PITA but our board was one of the few that didn't go down when prowling was big.

MS pushes updates to revert the blocks, July is the end of the free updates to 10 so hopefully the crazy will end.

However- disable the phone home stuff and tracking, Windows 10 is pretty nice. Unless your still on WinXP with 2gb RAM....
