WTH! Windows 10 no notice restart/update

I was surfing the internet this AM and my screen went blue with a "restarting" message.

No prior warning or notice that I saw.

It took more than 10 minutes after restarting to update and reconfigure.

Then it returns to the blue screen with "We've updated your PC"

    DUH!!!

Then a second message: "all of your files are exactly where you left them"

The message just stays up for more than a minute.

    OK, that's just creepy!

Then there was a message about exiting new features and the login screen comes up.

    WTH Microsoft!!!

Yep, Microsoft restricted user's control over updates in Win 10. Most of updates are done in the background. This blue screen restart should not happen too often if your computer is on regularly. Unfortunately there is no way to influence Microsoft decisions.

      Update:

I found in "settings" that it was still set to "automatic" for downloading and restarting.

Still, shutting down without warning while you are actively using the PC?
      Microsoft needs an enema!

        MS10

Lot's and lot's of complaints about MS10. Some have to do with collection of personal information and it's use. Some say the Feds are up to their eyeballs in MS10, not a good thing.

That certainly came to mind when I read the "your files are where you left them" line.

This was a good one about privacy settings.

While I feel that most Windows 10 privacy concerns are overblown, it's fair to say that the anti-Windows FUD crowd has had an impact on the mainstream media

After Bill Gates came out on the side of the Feds wrt that Apple phone thing, does anyone still have doubts the Feds have total access to any M$ product?

I would bet folding money the Feds have had full access to anything M$ for decades. Just another in the long line of reasons never to use their products, imo.

Windows 10 is faster than win 8 or win 7 and it comes in pre-customized package with Skype and other apps for free. All computers that I have upgraded to win 10 started working faster. However Microsoft seemed to adopt a new policy without any formal announcement if collecting data and pushing updates without asking customer's opinion or limiting customer's ability to control updates, build-in applications or collected data. It's coming to the point when the vendor dictates their choices to customers. I guess that is one of reasons for anti-monopoly regulations. For those concerned of privacy, the news is there is not much of privacy left in publicly accessed internet. The bottom line with Google search as an ultimate search engine and most if consumer market dominated by Microsoft and Google chrome privacy on the web somehow got lost along the lines of progress. Android is not an exclusion btw.

                      Really? Faster?

I tried the upgrade on two different systems. Both were windows 8. Made them even more sluggish. Reverted back and system was more quick (original speed before "upgrade")

A guy I was in a training class with had the very same thing happen to him, right in the middle of the class. He was taking notes, and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, everything starts shutting down. No warning. Fortunately, he had a good habit of hitting the Save button every few minutes or he'd have lost all of his notes. We all watched this unannounced reboot and thought, "that's not good...."

I've been using GNU/Linux distros since 2003 and am loving it. Currently I'm on Kubuntu 14.04 LTS, which as a desktop OS I find way easier to deal with than any version of Microsoft Windows. It's way more stable, no forced reboots, and with every application that I need and then some (I'm not a gamer). KDE (the desktop that comes with Kubuntu) is the interface that Microsoft should've adopted for Windows; it "just works".

Linux is great for home. And great for work servers. As for work desktop, not so much.

My Win 8.1 desktop suddenly shut down the other day.
                            WTF?
Turns out the cat likes to sit on top of the warm CPU case and stepped on the On/Off button. ...
