4K Worth It?

I was born in 1960 ( yea I'm an old fart). Back then we had a b&w tv with a 18" screen "we thought we were in heaven". The TV weighed 120 lbs or so.

We soon got a color unit but most shows were still b&w "we thought we were in heaven".

In the 70's we got the largest TV we could find 25" with space command (wireless remote) "we thought we were in heaven"

In the 80's we figured how to hook the TV to the stereo, it's wa boomin'we thought we were in heaven"

When we wanted large screen we sat on the floor 5 feet from the TV. we thought we were in heaven"

Now I have a 42" screen with hd, dvd and all kinds of crap that I don't understand and guess what, I think I'm in heaven.

My wife watches , fix that house, flip that house, and buy that dress so I spend all my time on a 10" I Pad on CalGuns or YouTube and there again I think I'm in heaven.

Maybe in 20 or 30 years I'll die and leave all my guns to my kids and let them worry which ones are legal. Then I really will be in heaven. Lol
I sure do hope there is a shooting range up there

Depending what is wrong with your DLP if it is just stuck mirrors you can replace it yourself for about 200 bucks. That is what I did until they get more content and the 4k gets cheaper and better.

So I picked up a Samsung 50" JS7000 SUHD and a Samsung BD-J6300 Bluray player that does the 4K upscaling. WOW!!!! is all I can say, it is so life like, the colors are so amazing, watched The Force Awakens and The Martian as soon as I got everything set up. Stunning.

Did you calibrate it or have it calibrated? If you have not heard of that, look around, there are lots of free tv/monitor calibration images/dvds/softwares and it might improve your picture.

One thing I noticed with LED tvs is that out of the box some of them look like no matter WHAT you are watching, it was filmed in a small studio with only cool white lighting. I was kind of sickened at RMR when they had Ghostbusters on the TV they had but it looked like a cheap Telenovela or whatever they are- it looks like a cheap soap opera in my opinion, the white light was just a bit much. I think they need their tv calibrated.

I have pretty bad vision, even with correction. About the only thing I can see a difference in is the jump from NTSC 525 line video to 720 - and that only on a large screen. Beyond that, it all looks the same to me.

Was able to look at identical sized 1080 and 4K sets at Costco a week or so back. Could NOT see any difference whatsoever. I see no difference between DVD and Blu-Ray either.

Having bad vision saves me a lot of money! But these days, I watch no TV whatsoever, and only the occasional movie - mostly on DVD.

i got a 70" tv and 28" monitor at 4k, love it.

Get 4k, because why not? Really though, the main argument I heard was that while 1080p is good for now, a 4k set can show the same content just as well, if not better due to other features, like local dimming.

Fyi 4k Netflix isn't very good..even an upscaled Blu ray will look better.

We didn't calibrate it, plan on trying to here soon when I get the chance. We just played around with the settings a little to make it look better. I'm sure with a proper calibration it'll be even better, how much so though, no idea.

Not currently worth it for a television. Monitors yeah.
