what are some good space games? Something similar to Freelancer

YEah Eve looked good but I thought it was pay to play and There are TWO things that I will not do in games.
1. Pay for a subscription to play ANY game. (there could be an exception but I have not found it yet)
2. Preorder anything or blindly pay for a game before it is released with the only exception thus far being a kickstarter campaign.

Yes Eve Online dates from the time prior to free to play MMO's taking off, and has had a significant enough number of paid subscriptions that they appear to have no plans for converting it to a free to play model as many others have done (free to play model just being code for pay to win model).
