what are some good space games? Something similar to Freelancer

I REALLY miss my freelancer. I miss mining asteroids, I miss salvaging parts
I miss trading and buying/selling and getting bigger ships and fighting off space pirates.

I REALLY miss that. I was thinking of loading it back up but are there any newer or updated games like that?

Freelancer was like a 3d version of MBBS Tradewars 2002...

Even the story was decent. I liked the easy to use controls too.

i think I played X for a little but I was not to thrilled about it and there was another game too that was really big, and eventually you could get your own starcruiser and all but I never really got into that. I liked Freelancer for the solo play AND I liked the extra addons with the additional star bases and factions.

Anything else that is cool or should I just hunt down my freelancer stuff and reload it?

Damn They say windows 7 is needed... I like the graphics. I aint thrilled that it is all brit based but maybe the brits got it right so it could be refreshing. I am not clear though if there is a single player feature or not.

It would be nice if you could play single player/ offline and build up your ship/wealth a bit and then enter the game. OR, at least have a PW on your account within the game so any character you come back as can access your in game account and use whatever money you made. I am not certain what happens when you die in this game. I do see some Battlestar Galactica and other influences in it though.

Do any of you have it? It there was a calguns clan I might be willing to wipe my game system and install windows 7...

The homeworld series: (best space rts with an AMAZING story ever created) it's just been remastered and can be had for around 25$.

There is a mod coming out that will let you pilot any ship in first person.

And yes, the graphics are really that good! The remastered pack on steam is also compatable with xp but you have to play the original versions that come with it.

Sins of a solar empire: another space rts where you can build your own solar system which is pretty neat.

You need to be logged into their server to play. Get the Steam version.

Yeah so after I hunted down my free lancer disk and loaded it up, I loaded up the Night Stalkers Universe mod and then it failed to allow me to play a single player game.

SO I reverted back to the vanilla game and loaded up the Discovery mod. I played it for about 4 hours and then shut it off (After saving) and went out. Later on when I returned I fired it up again and that damn discovery mod FAILED to show my saved game.

Low and behold, the mod dumps all the campaign I guess and that prolly includes the ability to SAVE the single player game too. I was PISSED but I thought that maybe I did something wrong so I played it for another two hours and then discovered that after saving my game twice, it does NOT show the saved games upon starting back up.

SO, I figured if I wanted to save any data, I would let a SERVER do it so I played the Discovery mod v88 on the discovery server. Wow it was packed. I mean, there were about 50 people connected and playing and I was just trading and all. Every now and then I saw a group or whatever of someone that was red (enemy) and they were humans but they left me alone. I played for about 5 hours and had a lot of fun.

Then this morning I fired it up to see that my stuff was still there and I did a 27 hop trade run and some ******* shot the space lane and then decided to bully me with his ship. I tried to get away and twice he shot my cruise enghine offline and then I used my thruster to get to the next trade line to get in and as I was docking and about to flip him the bird that mother****er shot the trade lane and the game would not let me move. Then he vaporized me.

****ing douche. Oh and THEN he gets on the system Chat and said: "Next time DON'T RUN."

I did not know how to chat back else I would have told him that I do NOT negotiate with terrorists...

****ing *****. He cost me $280k. I am looking forward to shooting his punk *** next time. He is nothing but a level 87 bully to my level 35 character... My issue is also that with all of the guns and ships in the game, I do not know what is the most powerful weapons or strongest ships. Now that I play this mod they have capitol ships and freight liners and gun boats and all that.
I need to read the notes of the discovery mod and look and see what ships have the most guns that I can get and what the best guns are. I want heavy damage but I do not want to have to save up for a $30Mil gun boat. It took me 4+ hours of playing and I have a $2Mill very heavy fighter with full guns and only $500k in my bank now. I was taking 80 units of something that cost me $3500 each and I was gonna sell them for $5900 each... I was finally able to start making some money in that server...

I am NOT thrilled about mods. I like them when they work but the better ones almost ALWAYS have bugs. I played homeworld and I was not excited about it. I played X-revolution and it seemed okay but I did not get into it.

I DID play Darkstar-1 but there was something that was confusing and I ended up not getting into it. Maybe because I flew for 20-30 minutes and did not know what the **** I was doing and I THOUGHT I had some ship I found on a tractor beam and I THOUGHT I towed it in but then I had to beam out or I did not lock the cockpit and someone used a slimjim and flew off with it.

I dunno. Is Darkstar 1 the one with the hidden green artifacts that you gotta look for and collect or is that X- Revolution? I will have another look at Darkstar 1. I liked all the hype I read about it but then when I got in the cockpit I was like, WTF? this is gonna be a long game... It would be cool if you could get out and first person at some of the bases or planets.

When I win Lotto I am gonna start a game company and it will be an RTS with the ability to FPS on planets, own multiple ships and park them inside a planet/ asteroid with an impenetrable shield if you purchase or build it so that you can have a safe place to go and build things. Your ship skills and your character can level up in two different modes... :\

Oh yes, and a Chihuahua will get punched in the face.

If you end up making that game, be sure to give calgunners a discount it would also be amazing to play as a fps inside the space ships such as a battle cruiser or something. Control the main guns and fix hull breaches, board enemy ships and capture them. stuff like that

Yes, and not only that but there will be at least 150 different ship layouts complete with upper and lower decks in some cases. It will be like Deadspace meets Freelancer meets Borderlands. You can play cooperatively with friends and be a crew that goes around raiding and boarding other ships. Hell, why not even make it have some elements of Skyrim where you can steal small thigns inside the ships too like cargo and small arms and ID badges and stuff that can be sold on the black market. In the 18+ version you can steal clothes...

That one looks cool but I wonder if you can get out and do a lot in first person. I saw no crosshairs go up and no weapon go out.

Actually looks like Battlestar Galactica but I would like to see more on the trading and dogfighting.

That is one thing that I like about Freelancer- There are tractor-beams and trading. Darkstar-one seems to be very lacking there. I was playing Darkstar-one last night and I remembered that there is only ONE ship in the game and it is yours. You can not trade or sell it for a different ship. It is just a ship... Also there is no such thing as a tractor-beam.

One of the cool things about freelancer is being able to chase people or pirates (or anyone) and shoot them and then tractor in bits of their ship (including the pilot if they eject) and their cargo. That was how you got a large amount of weapons. Finding old wrecks and prying the weapons from their cold dead hulls (with your guns). You can also go to certain fields of debris and mine them. Some asteroids game up scrap, some gave h-gas or whatever, the ice fields gave up water. And you shoot things and just tractor in the scraps and then go sell it for easy money- well until a pirate or two shows up on patrol, then you deal with them, pick up the pieces and go back to mining.

There are also about 100+ different guns you can put on your ship. I do not know about darkstar-one but so far I only saw lasers. They gave no indication of damage or what they do whereas in Freelancer you can see how fast projectiles shoot and their damage for hull and shields and their distance and refire rate.

Darkstar is the game with the artifacts that you have to hunt down. I like the idea about jumping but it is lacking in a few ways that I really liked about freelancer.

I thought I broke it today. I took photos on some mission and on the last photos the military showed up and told me they were of a sensitive nature and they wanted me to delete them. I tried to tell them that they needed to talk to the people that hired me and they did not listen. I asked if I was being detained and they did not respond. I asked if I was free to go and they said nothing so I chose path 3. which was for my character to say Over and Out. and then they all started trying to shoot me. I Was like WTF *******S? Over a goddamn photo of a stupid trade station- GO TALK TO THE PEOPLE THAT HIRED ME!
They started chasing me (cause I hit the thrusters) and I made it back to the trade station (only like 7 u away anyways) and then once on the trade station I was told mission accomplished and I got money and all and I looked around but I could not talk to anyone abotu what had just happened. So I LEFT to get into my ship and after I did and I was coming otu of the gates, the damn military had 4 ships waiting for me.
For the record, THEY DREW FIRST! I only defended myself because they were trying to kill me. And after I killed the first one (really weak anyways) I was named a Felon. I was like HEY WTF? Then on the second one I was named a High Criminal or something and then finally after killing like 8 of them I was called a Terrorist. I was like- NO! It is a BIG misunderstanding! YOU ****ERS SHOT AT ME FIRST! I WAS SHOOTING BACK IN DEFENCE OF MY LIFE! Do you think they listened? Nope. I targeted a ship and tried to contact the pilot but he was like- This is gonna end only one way for you... I was like, **** you then. So I got into ANOTHER scrap with this second wave and then more and more and more came And I was like- Oh this game is so full of ****- You can NEVER find this many cops (yeah, the police joined in too, so much for them being good guys; I think some might have been on the take) in one system let alone a cluster! I killed 28 ships before my shields were finally worn down and My ship blew up but I was like **** YOU all the way. So then I respawned back on the trade station (autosave position when you dock) and I was like, OKAY, I hope this is all good now... I left and damn they were there waiting again, I was like oh HELL NO. This is BULL****. This ****ing game! I tried to contact the first guy before any shots were fired and they wanted nothing to do with me again. THAT was when this game started being unreal. Oh BULL****. So After killing so many of them I respawned back on the station and I looked around for the police kiosk or the authorities to try to explain my situation and nobody wanted anything to do with me. There was NOWHERE for me to go to tell my side of the story, so I was like, stuck on this stupid foodcourt of a station for who knows how long. I went back to the equipment dealer and figured out I could buy a few more things so I did but they were nothing special. I went outside again and these stupid military jackholes were still trying to chase me so I just hit thrusters and did a full burn. I tried to jump to another system but this stupid message came on that said HOSTILE SHIP WITHIN 4U or something so I went ahead and targeted the closest one and noticed that they did not seem to have thrusters so I would hit my afterburner and I would see them go 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and I had to stop and let the afterburner charge back up but then full burned it again and finally when I got to 4.1 I hit the jump and I flipped them the bird and made it to another system and they did not follow. I was so pissed off. I found no way to correct this and no way to see my reputation as showing that I needed this kind of treatment. My reputation as a merc/trader is in good standing. I hope those pigs don;t have a hardon for me when I go back to that system. I would hate to have to spank them again.

However the graphics are a tad better/ updated but I miss the trade lanes of Freelancer. This game, although having cool features, is lacking in several ways. I will see what this mining ore resource thing can do for me later on when I get to class 3 and attach it to my ship. I think it is a tractor beam of some sort.

So then it is X-revolution that had a HUGE space look to it and took forever to do anything in if you were not careful.
