I've had buddies stash guns at my house for short term safe keeping.
But then again, I've got some good friends. I've taken care of their children and pets when need be. Vice Versa.

Next, camo it, tablecloth over it/stuff piled next to it/on it or give it an new facade -- slip a refrigerator box around it. Get creative.

This is pretty good advice, if the safe is in the house, put a key lock on the door, / door knob of the room it is in. I would call it HOUSE SITTING. Not gun sitting, even when talking to prospective ''sitters''. People get curious, then, its open season.

We'll probably get a house sitter so we don't have to board the dogs as well.

All of the suggestions such as alarm system etc are good, we have one but the local PD doesn't respond to residential burglary alarms unless someone will meet them at the residence, being 3 states away makes that impossible.
