IIRC the Kleck study indicated firearms are used up to 4 million times yearly in the USA to protect lives and property . The study further indicated that in 99% of those self defense instances a shot was not required.

Based on the above I would suggest folks buy what they are comfortable shooting .

Its unlikely a bad guy will scoff or question the lethality of a 22 !

If your a gun culture person, a self loading 40 or 45 would be my choice in California. In free states I would opt for a striker fired 9MM featuring 15,16,17 round capacity.
For a person who just wants a gun for self defense or camping use . 357 or44 caliber revolver . Probably a Ruger with the double lock feature .

I dont know much about the Glock 23 you currently own,but I do know some very well informed and serious persons swear by the glock platform.

Hard to go wrong with a Glock 19.

That said, you already have a handgun. Why not pick up a rifle or shotgun for home defense?

            Glock models: 21sf, 30sf, 34, 17, 19

The 1911 is a sweet little thing as well.

Either a Hi-Point or a Wilson Combat 1911, everything in between is for weenies!

VP9... It can shoot around corners.

Not a handgun, but Benelli M2 or M4

Try out a 9mm barrel in your 23, if that doesn't do the trick,
                      sell the full package.

Also, try out someones Glock 22 or 17,
the full size handgun may be more manageable.

I usually let new shooters (I know you're not new)
try out the Glock 26, 19 and 17 and they all seem to gravitate
                      to the full size 17.

If a barrel conversion and/or the full size don't do the trick for you,
then I'd consider a different platform. The Glock isn't for everyone.

I started out almost 40 years ago on the 1911 and stuck with it for decades.
I continually tried and didn't like the Glock since it came on the market,
which included shooting competitively with one and performing awfully every time without fail until finally committing to the platform and practicing with it often.

If you've got 2k rounds through a G23 and don't like it, try something else.
I've used 1911's and then an XD45 for nightstand and carry and really like the platform. Give it a try. I find them very comfortable, and it's hard to argue with a .45

That's just my experience. Your results may vary.

                      Good luck.
