Springfield xd9It is better to stand and fight. If you run, you will only die tiredComment

I think the best way would be to visit a local range that rents a variety of handguns, and try as many of them as you can.
It might be that the .40cal has too much recoil, making it unpleasant to shoot. Try a 9mm or a .45acp in 1911 and see if you like it better. A good home defense firearm is one that you can trust and shoot the best with in my opinion.
For me, home defense means a Benelli 12 gauge semi-auto shotgun.
If for whatever reasons, I'm forced to use a handgun, it'll be the Beretta Px4 Storm 9mm. Not sure where you're located but if you're in the Bay Area, Reeds Indoor range rents these and you can go try it out.Comment

In terms of home defence, get yourself a fullsize 9 mm pistol. I suggest an all metal gun because you don't want to have to worry about limp wristing the gun if you got a glock for example. My go to handgun is my rock island government model 1911 in 9mm with a Glock 26 as back up.Wise men seldom speak. - ArcusComment

What about it do you dislike? Without knowing that all you will get is a listing of what guns other people like.Comment

It's a matter of personal preference. You can't go wrong with any of the major manufacturers. Just pick a caliber and gun that you feel comfortable shooting and can shoot it efficiently then you're good to go.Comment

Easy answer .. the best one for HD and the range is the one you shoot best, is 110% reliable and you like the way it handles.
The hard part is that there are dozens of brands and models that fit that criteria for different people. Try shooting your friend's guns, rent as many as you can find/afford. You'll find one that works for you and it almost certainly will not be the one that any of us recommend.Comment

I'm pretty handy with Sigs thoughsigpicOriginally posted by gun toting monkeyboyYou did ask. They were only following your instructions. Next time be a bit more careful in how you phrase your posts. If you give people a straight line like that, this is about the level of response you are bound to get. Just be glad you didn't post "Date this rifle"... Those pictures are usually very disturbing.

Shoot your G23 until it feels right. Nothing wrong with your pistol.
As for home defense ... a rifle with a 16" barrel, a shotgun with an 18" barrel,
a dog, motion lights, and of course, cowbells. You're gonna need cowbells. In every room, and around the perimeter, the roof, chimney, dispersed throughout the shrubbery, up in the trees, and on the dog.Comment
