a rifleman has an edge over all other small-arms. (not including machine-guns of course) so rifle for me. however if left to the wife or my kids to defend themselves alone;i would want them to have a scatter-gun ...for obvious reasons.

Shotgun. jsut many more options as far as shells. I woudl take a saiga 12. I can use it for hunting both birds ( bird shot) deer ( slug or buck) or kill zombies ( slug or buck) jsut more options. Pistols dont have any range. simply close up weapon. rifles are great but limited on ammo choices so for what you describe the shotgun fits the scenario best

Man, I guess it really would be the end of the world if I had to make that choice.

My 16" AR10 with ACOG. A little heavier than an AR15, but has a much longer reach.

A 12 ga. shotgun is what I'd like to carry. Its different types of ammunition give it a versatility that others can't have.

But since others might have to use it, I'd probably go with a rifle.

Another SHTF question, huh? Rifle. I'd like it to be light, easy to carry, with good mag capacity, handy for close-in stuff, yet highly accurate and effective at longer distances, and super reliable.

Have to go with the rifle. Long distance shots. or short.

Rifle, of course. It doesn't get more versatile than that - you can hunt with it, defend yourself with it, and do both from a distance, thus improving your chances. Now the real question is why would you only have one? The reasons you stated aren't good enough

                          Shotgun!

Variety of ammo and when the zombies get too close, as we all know they manage to do at some point...it's a real lawn clearer.

Shotgun for hunting? Them zombies are good eaten', they taste just like dead chicken.

I'd choose what I usually use in 1st person shooter games- sniper rifle. Really don't have the ability to run and gun.
