There has been quite a bit of discussion on the ill effects of storing firearms in foam cases. What is the best way to store firearms ( both rifles and pistols)?

I store all of mine in gunsocks in my my climate controlled safe. That has worked for me for the past 30 years. No rust yet.... But then I live in a dry climate too.Endowment Member NRA, Life Member CRPA, SAF; Member GOA; Contributor CGN, NRA-ILA -
"Store"? As in how long?Comment

wipe them down with a silicone cloth and then store anyway you want. I have used foam for my guns for 30 years and never seen rust. But if you fingerprint a gun and set it down long enough, it will rust.Comment

Loaded
I keep silica gel packs in the foam case that my AR lives in, but my shotgun is on the wall, and my pistol is always on my hip.My AR is 7.62x39, so that if/when we get invaded, I can shoot their ammo back at them!

In a locked rack open to this glorious California air. Wipe it down with a silicone cloth and as long as it's clean and rust free when you were done using it, so shall it remain. Beauteous.Comment

You need an airtight (Or as much as possible) container. A safe is obviously ideal. But if not, a foot locker, crate, gun cabinet, etc. Seal the seams with caulk or similar as much as possible/if needed.
Get the following:
A Golden Rod
A box of desiccant
A humidity meter
A silicone cloth
All of the above go in the "container." Start with a clean gun wiped down with oil or the silicone cloth. Put said gun into the container. Check the gun daily and review the meter so you get a feel for what is going on. Continue checking daily until your confident that you have a good environment. Then check and wipe down your gun weekly.
If you discover you have a problem, you will have to make adjustments. Maybe your Golden Rod isn't big enough. Maybe you have too much outside air penetrating the container. Etc.
All of the above can be had off of Amazon for about $50 give or take. Make sure your golden rod and desiccant are sized appropriately for the size of your safe/container. If you're not sure, go bigger.
Oh, and be careful with open celled foam. It can retain moisture. Closed cell is better. And if you're going to store a gun in a case, it's probably better to remove the foam and store it in just the plastic case. Maybe wrap it in a silicone impregnated gun sock too.Last edited by L84CABO; 01-03-2015, 7:00 PM."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

In a climate controlled safe, bolted into concrete, guarded by grumpy police dogs and a vicious stay at home wife.. Has worked for me thus far."Hence it happened that all the armed prophets conquered, all the unarmed perished." - Niccolo MachiavelliComment
