    Good range in Orange County?

Going to be moving there next week and want to apply for my CCW. I also plan on becoming a member of a shooting range and the closest indoor ones are Firing-Line and on target. Firing-Line is $75 cheaper than On-target but which range is actually better? Might not need a big selection of guns just a nice friendly place to shoot.

Any suggestions on any other ranges indoor or outdoor that are nearby?

I've never shot at firing line, on target has a new backstop and allow a myriad of firearms now, they're under new ownership. You can even cruise a shotgun, 00, 000 and slugs even a rifle if 25 yard .308 is your thing lol. Sometimes it seems like that place is the wild wild west. Evans is a decent range but it seems everyone here says do not support Evans, http://calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=35667 , shoot at them when you get here and make your own judgement, myself I shoot at the public police pistol range.

+1 on on-target. the staff is pretty civil, don't seem to bother anyone unless someone's doing something incredibly stupid. it does seem to get warm inside the range at times though. i think their ventilation system is sometimes set only to bring in outside air, not necessarily conditioning the temperature.

and of course i appreciate any range that doesn't try to cram everyone to a few lanes even if there's barely anyone there.

I've been a member of the Firing Line for the past three years until I moved away.

I don't have any complaints about the service. Gary's been great and really friendly. He even wrote my CCW letter on my behalf. It's also a well maintained facility.

The drawback is that they don't allow any shotguns there, rifle calibers, or hollow point ammo except for your .22LR.

I haven't shot there since they came under new ownership, but they used to allow rifle with frangible ammo. Are they now letting rifle shooters in with standard FMJ or SP ammo?

            i've shot at both places.

            +1 for on-target.

i prefer on-target. the staff is really easy going. not much trouble. i got there before i goto firing-line. i have shot my 30-06 there recently. good bunch of guys. dave (staff) is really good with customers.

the problem i have with firing-line is that the staff really watch how fast you shoot. i have heard them time a person who might be shooting a round each second. they have looked at their watches and count every second. when they find out that you are double tapping, they will approach you and tell you "no rapid firing". i really didn't like that at all.

What are the ammo restrictions at On Target? I believe Firing Line does not allow steel case ammo either. I can live with that but no hollowpoint as well kills the deal for me. If the pass is 75 bucks cheaper and close for you though think about it. I'd shoiot one or two times at each range though and judge overall service and employee attitude though.

I personally do not shoot at Firing Line mostly because I don't want a year pass right at this time and range fee w/o it is quite high.

Last time I was in there they let some kid in there with a .308 rem 700, he was shooting FMJ and it appeared as the 1 second per round has been thrown out the window, at least while the angry russian isn't there, because there were a bunch of people double tapping.

+1 For On Target, its always been a chill place to go. The staff is always melow and they let you slide with double taps every once in a while. I would recommend them. Plus now with the new back stop and rifles allowed, looks like I need to go back soon!

I asked about rifle ammo last time I was at On-Target. They said they've shot .300 Win Mag without making it all the way through the new rubber to the steel. I like On-Target because you can shoot lead, FMJ, and hollow points. Also, if you feel like trying guns out, you pay $5 rental fee and you can shoot any rental gun. Most of the guys there are decently knowledgeable and helpful. Never shot at firing line but I don't like restrictions based on bullet type.

I have a membership at On Target and have to agree everyone is pretty laid back. I have yet to meet the new owner, but the new backstop is sweet. They'll let you shoot just about anything except for large rifle rounds (50bmg, etc) and shotguns now. The backstop is okay for bmg, but the rest of the place isn't and they don't want the liability.

Yes, they allowed shotguns for about a month, but as of this week they are banned once again because morons kept shooting bird-shot despite being told #3 buck or larger. They also were doing too much damage to the range beyond the safety risk of bird-shot ricocheting.

On Target was pretty cool. I had a membership there back in the day, but getting there was pretty hectic. What I loved was the 25 yard range (only other range that is 25 yards is the Sheriff's Range) and the amount of guns to rent. Dunno how the new owner is, but last time I was in there, their stock sorta dwindled. No more accessories or handguns that they used to sell.

My new home is The Firing Line in HB. Like Mark, Gary has been really cool, and the people there make an effort to remember your name. Because of Gary, Steve and Darrin over at The Firing Line, I think I'm gonna start continuing my patronage there. 50 ft instead of 25 yards.

Towards the end of the year the guys at On Target still didn't know my name, although they recognized who I was. Not good enough for the $225 membership they charge

The Sheriff's Range on Katella. Cool range. I actually love this range, but some people say otherwise. I like the 25 yard half outdoor/half indoor range. Usually $7 bucks per range session if I remember correctly. The Range Officers there were really cool, and quite honestly I didn't mind that they checked firearms. That way I'm guaranteed some moron wont come here with an unsafe gun. Jerry was cool and even lets me go get some lunch and come back whenever I'm ready, although they charge "by the hour".

                        Evans: Stay away.

i never understood how much fun pumping birdshot at a target 7 yds away till the paper dissolves can be. sure some people are there to pattern their shotguns, but many just pumping away to no end?

also, being able to use up my stored up wolf 7.62x39 at on-target is a plus.

When they first went to the granulated rubber backstop at The Firing Line, shotguns were still allowed. The second night, a guy comes out of the range and says, I keep getting hit with something. It turned out that the birdshot was bouncing off the rubber and coming all the way back to the firing line. We then allowed slugs. That lasted two days when the dents in the steel brows started multiplying.

The owner would rather be safe than sorry and doesn't want the constant repair bills so no more shotguns.
