Hey OP, Steve in 29 recommended the Walther CCP and if it becomes available before the end of the year, it might be worth waiting for.

I checked out a couple reviews and it seems like a great shooter that will fit your wife's needs. The review below has a video that's worth watching. The highlights are, great ergonomics, slim/compact, low recoil and easy/light slide manipulation. It's not on the CA Roster, so you will have to go thru the SSE process before the end of 2014.

        From OP

Thank you all for your input and suggestions.

I wrote down all of the models mentioned and will check them out with her.
Given the dozens of 9mm semi autos out there it sure will reduce the time to make a decision.

I will also check out some 380s as well.

That Walther CCP sure does sound like a viable candidate...if it becomes legal in California that is.

I appreciate all of your replies.
        Thanks again

Big ehh 5'8 155 ish. Not all skin and bones like alot of guys like. So she is taller than Alot of men I guess. Im wondering how you say the 92fs is huge? Compared to a revolver or sub compact maybe but to a G17 I dont see a huge difference.

First, a snubbie .38 is the go-to gun for women. Pull trigger- bang.

I would look at bigger guns with a lot of surface area to grip the slide- like an Hk USP9, etc.

Smaller guns will probably have stronger springs to make up for less slide mass, and less gripping surface. That goes for .380's too.

HK USP Compact and the P2000 series are easy to rack.

She's making it harder than it should be. Hold the slide static and move the strong hand with the frame out, not the slide inward.

Maybe check out used guns? I smaller 9 is just going to be harder to rack because of the smaller slide I'd think. The difficulty in racking a M&P full size vs M&P shield 9 is very different for instance. Maybe 380?

Check out a new manufacture gun and then keep with the manufacturers service recommendations. It will be an entirely new experience. The 92 series has proven to be an incredibly reliable and accurate platform.

Took the wife shopping for a home gun because my Ruger P95 was too hard for her to rack the slide. Checked out a M&P Shield 9 but is was too tough for her too. She liked a Romanian Tokarev. So we bought that.

All slides are easy to rack with proper technique.

Glock 19 sounds like it would fit the bill.

I'm not talking about cleaning. I'm talking about pistols that never get their springs changed at the manufacturers recommended intervals. Things get replaced when they break. And over cleaning is also a problem with pistols and rifles in the Army. You know what happens to a pistol that never gets it's recoil spring changed? It beats itself to death until it fails. Then you have crappy USGI mags that induced a lot of problems as well. Factory Beretta and Mec Gar mags are much better quality.

I've talked to a lot of guys who had experience with a military issued M9 and hated it, but when they got time on a brand new version, they loved it.

My wife liked the beretta the most for racking ease. But once we worked on her racking technique it didnt matter much anymore.
