We watched John Wick last night. Dish noted it as a three star rated movie. Wife checked on Rotten Tomatoes where it was rated 83% fresh by the critics and 80% by the audience, so I hit the VOD button.

What ensured was a violent fantasy completely devoid of reality, excessive murder by firearms, a plot designed only with the weakest of rational, and that only as a means to promote ammunition expenditure, multiple CGI graphics of exploding heads, hundreds of blood bags and squib load detonations, enough glass breakage to film a recreation of Kristallnacht, knives plunged into flesh, cars and the ominous black SUV's, slamming, burning, and generally being shot to shreds. The wife ran a continual critique of the stupidity of the anti-hero who was prone to be used as a pin cushion or test dummy for cutlery manufacturers, and had a mythical ability to be resurrected by a few tablets swallowed dry. She, the wife, continually ranted, "This got 83%?" My reply was, "Well maybe it'll get better." It didn't. Not even gourmet popcorn would have saved it, nor even a double shot of something sweet distilled from sugar cane would have numbed the mind enough to enjoy those visions of hell.

Reminded me of an old Clint Eastwood movie, The Gauntlet, where a small tract house was shot to pieces until it collapsed. As we left the theater I heard one attendee remark, "The only thing stupider than that movie, was me paying $7.50 to see it." Which about sums it up.

John Wick is but the latest release of that new genre, Video Game Inspired Dreck. Such as it is, the genre is aimed at adolescents, immature males of little brain or experience, and those budding psychopaths who believe that wholesale killing with firearms will transform them to real men, gain them respect and set them free from the voices and compulsions in their head. It is so bad that not even a warm puppy could raise it out of its nightmarish scenario into cinematic art. The best part of John Wick was when it ended.

I'll pass on that one. We did however appreciate the movie Lucy as it did have a underlying plot with an interesting premiss. Imagine what would happen if everyone in the nation were operating on 100% brain capacity. Why there would be no Democratic Party.

It's more than a movie. The blood and guts of these over the top mayhem films is setting the public's opinion of firearms and setting the psychological stage for banning them. We see a constant theme of guns=crime=equal murder= they are so dangerous no one should own them. Hollywood is engaged in some not so obvious brainwashing that sets the archetype in those minds either too young or susceptible to misinformation. They should be held to a higher standard.

I recently got the blu-ray of this and watched the movie, the special features and the directors' commentary.

If you watch the Red Circle club scene carefully, you'll see that he switches from shooting right-handed to left-handed multiple times, whether two-handed or one-handed. His primary handgun was on his right and he was drawing/holstering his back up at his 6 or 7 left-handed . I thought that was pretty cool to shoot ambidextrously like that. He writes with his left, but he was shooting the rifle and shotgun right-handed.

On the director's commentary, they said they paid attention very carefully to how many shots he took. He does tac reloads as well as emergency reloads. They said he trained with LA SWAT and "their Navy SEAL friends." Also, you'll hear the one director call out all the unrealistic things during the movie. It's rather funny and shows they know exactly the difference between reality and movie making.

In the special features, the fight choreographer said they they would start from what was real, then change things if needed to be seen by the camera. Keanu did most of the fight scenes as well much of the driving, learning how to do 360's, 180's, 90's and 45's with the car.

Overall, I thought it was a really good action movie with way above average gun handling.

Now that was a truly horrible movie.

This movie had all the plot and script of a 1970's kung-fu film... "you killed my puppy. prepare to die!"... but it was an AWESOME movie when it's all said and done...
What makes CAR so good for film making and the reason it "looks so good" is that it keeps the gun in the same close up frame as the actor/actresses head...
