Do you have any common sense ? You are on a website that is full of Leo, and other entities that can possibly punish the shop for what you have just said if it is really against the law so in fact you are already doing something about it just by making this post and putting them on blast.

And for you to say they've ripped you or your buddy off, because they are following the law to get you to have a second form of ID is not ripping you off. It then trying to help you! They could have just told you to leave and come back with a second form of ID and not mention anything about how to obtain a second form of ID.
Nice over reaction buddy! You sure you don't work for markleys?

I've never had a problem with Markley's, or any other LGS for that matter. Being a gun buyer/owner requires "due diligence" on your part. Prior to the internet's existence obtaining legal information (and reviews of businesses) was far more labor intensive than it is today.

I'm not the fastest bullet in the magazine, so I typed in, "documents needed to buy a handgun in CA". I was sent to this link:

The only way they might have been screwing him is if he tried to use a lease agreement and they said he had to buy a fishing license instead. You said he didn't have any secondary proof, they suggested a way to get proof, I don't see the problem.

I had an FFL tell me my CCW didn't count but a bank statement would work and that was for a rifle transfer. A lot of FFLs don't know the law, that doesn't mean they are trying to screw you.

The ATF only requires the correct address on one govt issued document. If his ID has his home address, he is fine according to ATF. The STATE requires a 2nd form. Fishing license might be OK now.

I was told by my FFL the cell phone bill is not acceptable. It has to be an addressed "hard" service" like electric, cable, auto registration, or government agency.

OK - so which is it???
Government-issued (city, county, special district, state or federal) documentation that has all of the following - - This does not include a drivers license or DMV-issued ID card:

The name of the transferee as it appears on the transferee's CDL or CID.
The name of the transferee as the transferee declares on the DROS form.
The residential address of the transferee as it appears on the transferee's CDL or CID or the address update attachment to the driver's license/identification card.
(CDL is abbrev for current drivers license)

If your ID has current address, you are okay with ATF. 2nd proof just need to comply with CA DOJ requirement.

If your ID does not have current address or is a PO Box, than you need to submit another proof of residency that satisfy ATF requirement. What's accepted by ATF is very different from CA DOJ.

If you have a valid vehicle registration issue by CA DMV with current address than it will satisfy both. If you don't have one because it's register in your parents' or wife's name, you might have to bring stuff like W2, Fed tax return to satisfy ATF on top of CA DOJ requirement. Utility bill is NOT accepted by ATF as 2nd proof of residency.

They way I understand it you can't use a hunting/fishing licence because those you can get printed up at any Walmart or Big 5. I think think this rule is from back in the day when you had to hand-write everything in though, making it even easier to fudge.

I used my deer tag when I bought my 1911 a couple months ago. It worked because it had all the required info and came straight from the DFG, I even had the envelope to prove it.

And btw, next time you suspect a LGS of doing something illegal but not really harmful or shady (like this, most likely do to bone-headedness) please don't broadcast it on the internet. At least leave their name out of it if you must ask. I'm not the biggest fan of Marley's either but they are all we've got and I don't want them raided over something stupid like this.
