Even if it wasn't in a holster, so what? It's sitting on a desk. You need to stop treating firearms like some kind of magical voodoo witchcraft object that has a mind of it's own. I have other loaded firearms as well, that are far too large for a holster, and aren't even immediately within eyesight. Yet they aren't just jumping up on their own to run outside and murder people. You have serious problems that you need to work out on your own.

Those four basic rules are for when the gun is in your hands, to prevent bad things from happening by you when they are in your control. I am talking about habits that apply when the gun is not in your hands or in your immediate control. Maybe you're pro enough and have an environment that is safe to do so but as a general rule I recommend unloading your firearms when doing activities such as photography.

If you have a little kid roaming around your home and cannot leave a firearm sitting on a table, fine. But that is YOUR situation that YOU need to evaluate, loaded or otherwise. Not everyone has kids roaming around, or even has kids at all to worry about. If you're having a party, then again you need to evaluate YOUR situation to determine whether or not you can leave a gun sitting on a table, again loaded or otherwise.

If you are incapable of evaluating your current environment to determine whether or not it is possible to leave an inanimate yet dangerous object sitting by itself, then you should evaluate whether or not you are actually responsible enough to handle owning that object. It could be a firearm, it could be a knife, hell it could be a tesla coil(yes, people do have those at home). What you shouldn't do is spout a bunch of paranoid nonsense about earthquakes and blackouts because you cannot guess the current situation that other people have evaluated for themselves.

If you started off this dialogue stating it's situational I would have agreed with you. Again, an assumption on your part. Of course that's irrelevant since I already stated there were other loaded firearms without holsters, yet there is no safety issue occurring.

Having the hammer back is so natural on a 1911 for me that I don't even notice it. What really bugs me is when people take pictures/show off a pistol with the slide locked back... especially people on commercials/paid programming type videos! "Oh yeah this is such a nice pistol, so ergonomic, so concealable, so blah blah blah."

I can't even tell what it really looks like because it's practically broken in half and the barrel is pointing at the sky! If you're gonna be that anal about "safety" you might as well field strip it and show me the slide in one hand and the frame in the other! Make sure you both shout "CLEAR" unnecessarily loudly every time you and your partner hand the gun back and forth too.

Same thing goes with gun stores that have zip ties and cable locks all over the guns so can't even really get a feel for them. I mean, I'm all for safety, but when you've got a gun so hog tied that you can't even hold it right then you've gone too far.
