    Plinking

    Hey Guys,

Im taking a trip up to Mendocino national forest next weekend and Im looking to do some plinking. Aside from your ordinary cans and bottles, what other objects can you recommend me? I got some ketchup in those fast food packages to tape up to a cardboard box, that should be some messy fun. Whatever I use I would clean up, and I prefer biodegradable stuff so I dont need to worry about cleaning too much stuff up. THANKS!

Melons, bowling pins, clay pigeons (on stands), there's tons of stuff. I like to shoot food stuff because you can just leave it and the critters will gobble it up. Bowling pins are easy to deal with and are pretty cheap.

I have heard alot of people recommending bowling pins... stupid question, do they shatter when hit or just get knock down. Im talking 7.62x39, 7.62x54, 8mm mauser.

I fired my 91/30 at some bowling pins. It'll splinter em a little bit but they'll mostly hold together. Depends on where you hit really.

The plastic covering the wood on the bowling pins are pretty tough. After a while, the wood splinters and breaks up but the plastic pretty much stays in shape.

I go to the 99 Cents Only store and buy $10 worth of melons. Aim the round to hit the ground a few inches in front of the melon, the round will deflect off the hard ground and go into a spin. Watch the melon explode.

Small balloons filled with cheap non-gel (duh) shaving cream can be fun too.

buy a big ol' sack of potatoes. They're cheap, come in a variety of sizes for varying skill levels, and explode when you hit them. I built a stand out of three re-bar rods wired together with strings tied to the top bar. I put some sheet rock screws on the end of the strings, screw potatoes and blast 'em.

Strike anywhere matches, place them in the ground flame side up. Make sure there isnt anything flammable around for at least 15 ft. Wouldnt want to start a wildfire. When you hit the tip just right they light. I aim for the tip so the bullet just slightly grazes it at 100 yards to light them.

Plastic army men. Dig trenches, and set back 25 yards and shoot from prone. Trust me, its fun.

                          BBQ brickets.

                          Watermelons filled with jello.

A lit flare at night. Put it behind an old frying pan.

I once rolled a bowling ball down a hill and opened up on it with a 223. Moving target was fun but 223 just put little holes in it. The 308 and 30-06 did a good job of splitting and destroying it, but there is some clean up involved.

Split playing cards edgeways at 100 yards.
