I ALWAYS CONTACT LOCAL POLICE DEPT I explain I am purchasing a used Gun and ask if they can run the numbers to be certain Gun not stolen. In past 25 years the Local So Cal PD have always accomodated me and 1 time on an off roster HK94 determined it was stolen from Las Vegas.
LGS can all tell you during the 10 day wait they have been contacted by DOJ allerting them to hold gun because it is stolen, since you can legally own stolen property you can't file a insurance claim.

Edit. Post above. Since you can't be legal owner of stolen property you won't be able to make a claim against any insurance either.

Never thought of doing that sandseeker. Good idea and thanks for the tip.

OP, if you were buying from me, here's how the process would go:
                  1) we'd agree on the price before meeting. I don't dicker.

                  2) I would arrive at the FFL with the firearm, and let the counter folks know I was there to sell a firearm to a private party. Sometimes they ask to inspect the gun to make sure its safe, sometimes they ask to hold the gun behind the counter until the buyer arrives. Sometimes they don't care.

                  3) You arrive, and you are given all the time you want to inspect the firearm.

                  4) You like what you see, and I then produce a Bill of Sale/Receipt that you *must* sign before any other paperwork is started. This makes it clear we've agreed to the terms, it makes it clear what your responsibilities are, and what mine are not. This is my proof you've received everything we've agreed on.
4a) This is very important. On my BoS, I outline who is responsible should your background check fail and/or any private or gov agency delay your picking up of the firearm. Basically, once this doc is signed by us both, I no longer "own" the gun; should the FFL contact me and tell me to come pick it up because you didn't/can't, I will tell them it is no longer mine, and to please surrender it to the proper authorities. No refunds for any reason!

                  5) You then hand over that signed BoS, the cash, I count it, and then sign the second copy of the BoS for you to keep for your records. This is your proof you've paid in full.

                  6) We then start the paperwork with the FFL. My side is usually done in a few minutes, we shake hands and part ways.

                  7) Your side is usually done in 15-20 minutes, after which you pay the FFL their fees. They then keep the firearm for 10 days and you come back to pick it up after.

                  YMMV.

Actually, you can legally own stolen property. LEAs auction off stolen property all the time.

Didn't we just have a long and rancorous and highly entertaining thread about this?

                          This isn't complicated.

                          1. You agree to buy my Glock.
                          2. We decide to meet at OC Armory, because Turners Blows.
                          3. We already have each other's cell number. You text me that you're
                          In the parking lot.
                          4. Exiting our cars, we shake hands and walk to my Trunk.
                          5. I open the trunk, you fondle and inspect the Glock. Below the line of sight of others.
                          6. You like it.
                          7. You hand over the CASH to me.
                          8. I lift the weapon out of the trunk and we walk into OC Armory.
                          9. I place the Glock box on the corner counter; Mike inspects it to make sure it's unloaded.
                          10. We both hand over our papers. You, your CDL and Car Registration, and HSC card. Me, my DL only. We fill out papers. We thumb print.
They make copies, they ask both of us questions.
                          11. Done deal, you pay $35 bucks.
                          12. Go home. Come back in 10 as pointed out in your Receipt by Mike
                          13. Total time 14 minutes. You take a bad cell photo of Glock to post on Cal Guns.
                          14. The pilgrims over at Turners are still looking at their pulled number and realize 14 people are ahead of them.
                          15. You post a positive itrader rating, I do the same for you.

Some dealers do not want you to pay in their store as they find that insulting/offensive. I learned to always pay outside after PPT has started. You also never know if the dealer will point out a flaw/crack or have trouble with the paperwork. So I pay outside as we leave together.
