you broke the law and opened yourself up, butt in the air, to the scrutiny of law enforcement

once you cause contact with a cop ( completely your own doing) expect to be thoroughly checked out...thats exactly what I want him to do for me as a citizen...keep people on point and obeying the rules

sure you can escalate things and refuse to answer his questions...and get a completely predictable response...suspicion and harder scrutiny

theres no intrusion or suspicion implied by the cop asking you questions with the info he has available.....its good police work, and the kind of police work that when done day after day finds that 1 in 100 paranoid nutjob going around with a firearm with a chip on his shoulder because his "rights" are not going to be violated

real world...not fantasy world...hopefully you'll be denied a ccw if you ever apply...you're just a little freedom fighter in the making looking for a battle in the most free country on the planet.

it is all about the indvidual. this country was founded on the principle of individual liberty. the rights of the individual normally trump the prerogatives of the state. nowhere in this scenario is the cop justified, no matter how much "on point" you want the rest of us to be.

additionally, your comfort level with gun registration is disturbing. there should be no way for any state agency to know what guns we have. the fact they do is immaterial. the state's usage of that information should be resisted at every chance.

Good one for the cop....why not ask?...make sure if you do have them with you they're being properly secured and transported...a perfectly polite inquiry

too many Zimmermans / paranoids out there to count, too easy to get guns even when you have a screw loose or bad intentions

all for polite, good thorough police work anytime, keeps everyone on point and observing the rules

Even that's way too much chatter between a citizen and an Officer asking such an absurd question. Technically, you're under no obligation to provide any information beyond your License, Registration and Insurance.

They can get an astounding amount of info from their data terminals in the vehicle. I don't so much mind them finding out I own guns, but it depends on what they do with the info. If they want to search my vehicle based on the fact that I own guns, I'm opposed to that. It's nothing more than a fishing expedition. There is too much of that and not enough people are telling them no.

LEO can access the AFS (AUTOMATED FIREARMS SYSTEM) database from their vehicle. They will be able to see any firearms you have registered in California.

It is not illegal for them to ask, however I would politely decline to answer their question.

"Officer I appreciate your questions but I am now asserting my constitutional right to remain silent. Is there any additional documentation I need to provide to assist you in this fishing expedition lawful vehicle stop? Also, this vehicle stop is being recorded for quality assurance purposes."

Regardless of how the contact was initiated, assertion of your right to remain silent, and avoid self-incrimination, should not be construed as refusal to cooperate with LE's investigation of you, nor should it warrant escalation from LE, or a harder line of suspicion-based questioning.

Silence should not infer that a crime has been committed, is being committed, or is about to be committed. It adds up to nothing more than a citizen who is aware of their rights, which LE seems to despise.

If you feel just in assisting LE do their jobs, feel free to do continue doing so, but do not condemn or belittle those of us that feel it is not in our best interest to do so.
