Routine traffic stop, asked about my registered firearms

They won't be able to search data base for felony criminal ownership of weapons, (they won't have record of ownership) so what's the point.

Why not? If gun owners want to protect and expand their gun rights, then at some point they're going to have to stop acting as though owning guns is somehow wrong or illegal.

While I agree with you, and want to do everything in my power to promote responsible, sane, gun ownership; I cant afford the vandalisim or curious LEO stops that may come along with unnessesary bumper stickers. Also, I just dont like them unless it says, GET OUT OF THE PASSING LANE.

The majority of California Police agencies have MDC’s (Mobil data computers) installed in their vehicles. Those MDC’s can query both national and state law enforcement and DOJ data bases. DMV, criminal history, wants and warrants, and the automated firearm files to name a few. It is an easy thing for an officer to enter your identifying information into the system and search whatever data base he believes appropriate.

I do not know the answer to your question. It seems to me that it would all depend on how the system is configured. I suspect it is not hard to configure a single entry to query any number of different data bases.

Good one for the cop....why not ask?...make sure if you do have them with you they're being properly secured and transported...a perfectly polite inquiry

too many Zimmermans / paranoids out there to count, too easy to get guns even when you have a screw loose or bad intentions

all for polite, good thorough police work anytime, keeps everyone on point and observing the rules

I agree. To me, the cop's question was on par with asking, "Have you been drinking tonight?" Not many people (even here) would have a problem with being asked that, because deep down inside they don't view drinking as doing something wrong or illegal. I don't have a problem being asked about my guns for the same reason. And, frankly, as a responsible, nonprohibited person, it doesn't bother me in the least that an LEO might find out about them via a database. Owning guns is not a crime, and if enough people stand up and be counted, it never will be. Soap box plea to all: stop thinking and acting like you're doing something wrong. Help make gun ownership normal and socially acceptable again in all parts of this state.

By the way, I listened to the recording, and I thought the OP's response was completely appropriate, and the entire situation was well handled by both parties involved. Good job, dorbie!

Nope, a cop can ask anything they want. No intrusion. The "intrusion" could have been avoided by not making an illegal turn.

Now, that said, I just wouldn't answer the question. Don't be there to interfere with their job, but on the same token there's no sense in giving them blind consent so their job is easy.

I'm too worried about broken glass or key'd paint. I also don't like to advertise to the world that this house probably has firearms in it.
