The following types of pistols, chambered to fire a 9mm Luger cartridge, may be requested for testing and evaluation purposes under a future solicitation:

Class One Pistol: barrel length between 3.75" and 4.25"; with a minimum magazine capacity of 13 rounds.

Class Two Pistol: barrel length between 4.5" and 5.5"; with a minimum magazine capacity of 15 rounds.

Class One Training Pistol (Red Handle): deactivated with full articulation, red receiver and slide, night sights.

Class One "Man Marking" (a.k.a., "Simunitions") pistol: blue slide or slide with blue inserts.

Seems like this RFP is tailored for 9x19mm Glock pistols.
      Class One = Glock 19
      Class Two = Glock 17/34
Class One Training Pistol = Glock 19P
Class One "man marking" pistol = Glock 19T

So this is what ? Fair Warning ?

Chance for everyone else to develop the missing parts so they can submit a proposal in Q1 2015 ?

A lot of people are done with the 40, I had one but never fired it sadly I would have kept it maybe, I fired one a couple years ago and thought why not get one. I fired one a couple months ago and said now I know I don't want one, well the last one was a Glock so you know the story.

The RFP calls for various commercial "off the shelf" 9x19mm semi-auto pistols.

"off the shelf" is generally used as a term for already existing in the commercial market.

Moving to 9mm? They must have already shot up all those millions of rounds of .40 s&w they bought last year. /sarcasm

Why change their weapon system? I doubt that they could show a statistical improvement in going to 9mm, except for range scores, and ammunition costs.

40 is more powerful than 9 and benefits from all the modern bullet advancements... but it doesnt seem to matter at all.

The problem is that 9, 40, and 45 all dont really stop people when you shoot them. They're all pretty weak. Its pretty crazy how many police videos are out there showing people getting shot straight in the chest (sometimes a few times!) and just running off like nothing happened... regardless of handgun caliber.

So it just ends up that 9 is smaller, lighter, and holds more rounds (not for us CA guys though). Makes sense that LEO's would go back to 9. Not because it does anything better at all, but because it really does stuff about the same as the other 2 big calibers.

i like .40, but i like all pistol calibers. i prefer speed so i gravitate toward 9mm. i chalk it up to lack of personal skill to be able to handle a .40 or .45 as well as i would like. maybe one day, but for now, it's 9mm for me.

Kind of funny how we went from .38spc or 9mm to 10mm - to .40S&W - to .357sig - even .45GAP; looking for that "Magic Bullet" and now we're all back to good ol' 9mm.

santa clara county sherriffs department is switching back to the 9mm from the 40sw. but only will use department issued plus p ammo. im not sure which model glock it is they are going to or which specific ammo.

The 40 S&W caliber is on the same flight path as the Raphus cucullatus, also known of the Dodo Bird.

Do not forget the 327 Magnum, 45 GAP, 32 H&R Magnum, 10mm, 451 Magnum, 357 Sig, yada yada yada.

If this really does happen(big if)all it means is that in a few years there will be arguments and accusations that the new 9mm ammo is not performing at a high enough standard and we need to look into replacing it with something better.

So the Army is thinking of dumping the 9 and going with the 40, and the FBI is thinking of dumping the 40 and going with the 9.

Typcial government. FUBAR. The taxpayers will be left holding the bag.
