Transporting Shotgun (full time) Discrete Mount

I would hate to have my vehicle broken into, and the firearm now in the hands of a criminal. Even if it's locked up... We all know locks can be busted...

Id love to keep a shotgun in the car but im not really sure how I would do it. I was thinking like this or this would be nice but Im not sure either would fit and even if one did Im not sure how I would mount it.

LEO shotgun mount/locks are pretty robust and it would take time to defeat. If your vehicle has a GPS tracker on it it's very likely it would be recovered before they had time. But more importantly mounted under the rear jump seat as OP described they wouldn't even know it was there. Most likely not even if they stole the truck because the only way to find it would be to raise the rear jump seat.


Since my PC-4 takes the same Mags as my CC weapon I wouldn't even need to keep mag near it because I'd already be caring them. Nothing illegal about locking an extra mag or 20 in my center council.

Not necessarily. Lying to police is not an arrestable offence, so they would have to have a real reason, which they would have to prove as so in a court, to arrest you. However, anything you say can be used to make you look bad, so in this case you should probably say nothing beyond "Do you have a reason to ask me that?" If they say that they do, respond with "We can continue this conversation with my attourney," and then just shut up besides saying that you don't consent to them searching you or your vehicle, or giving them your ID if you absolutely must.

OP, if your shotgun lock can be opened with a handcuff key, you might as well just keep it in the rack with a rubber band. Those keys are a dime a dozen.

The Attorney General's Office states that

"SHOTGUNS AND RIFLES
Nonconcealable firearms (rifles and shotguns) are not generally covered within the provisions of California Penal Code section 25400 and therefore are not required to be transported in a locked container. However, as with any firearm, nonconcealable firearms must be unloaded while they are being transported. A rifle or shotgun that is defined as an assault weapon pursuant to Penal Code sections 30510, 30515, or 30520 must be transported in accordance with Penal Code sections 16850, 25610, and 30945, subdivision (g)."

I have a F150 extended cab, the back seats fold (60/40). What I am doing is underneath the larger seat I will be mounting a police shotgun rack that is remotely unlocked via a hidden button which activates an electric solenoid or manually unlocked with a hand cuff key. I plan on storing a NEF single shot 20 gauge. Of course I will keep it unloaded however my plan is to store some ammo on a butt-cuff ammo carrier.

On a side note the luxury of the mount beside safety and convenience is that when the seat is normally folded down it would be invisible from any angle. I know as a courtesy one could disclose they are transporting a firearm, but is there a "legal" obligation to do so?

I would assume the remote solenoid might cause an issue since technically its not "locked" and is accessible from the driver seat. I'm not sure if that makes it illegal but I wouldn't want to find out in the bad way.

Although I bet the locking trunk release style would work. Requires a key then just pull and it pops open.

How is it not technically locked? If it's designed and manufactured as a lock and is in the "locked" position, it would technically be locked regardless of the ease of unlocking. It doesn't matter where it is in the vehicle as long as it isn't in a place the law specifically prohibits such as the glove compartment or a utility compartment. I could have a rifle case on the passenger seat and as long as it's locked the fact that I can unlock the padlock while in the driver seat is irrelevant.

I plan on mounting the push button accessible only from the rear of the cab. I agree they will most likely not look under the seat.

A LEO officer will have a HARD time proving I wasn't headed to the range. Although they could arrest me, I believe the DA won't bother filing charges since they have the burden of proof. I'm going with a single shot because I don't believe I will be in a gun battle. However, I regularly practice with the single shot which makes me fairly fluid with reloading. Plus, After years in the Marine Corps and 5 combat deployments I am fully aware that I should always seek cover when engaging a threat and move to better cover while reloading.

If 6 rounds of 20 gauge can't deal with the situations then sh*t is sideways. And because I am aware I have no back-up I don't plan on sticking around. I will engage the "immediate" threat then use my F150 to break contact and call police for help ASAP!

Most trunks have a cable or solenoid release that is accessible from the drivers seat. Granted the gun in the trunk can't be reached from the drivers seat but neither could the shotgun under the jump seat unless you are a lot younger and more limber then I am.
