Actually I think this is a pretty good idea.. I know without a doubt that the 1 second it takes to get them on while you're standing up could be the difference between life and death, but maybe someone could fire off a couple shots and be able to hear their whimpers as their ears bleed with your earmuff's volume turned up... should make them easier to locate and possibly temporarily throw their balance / thinking off track.

There is the other side of the argument that by that time, your daughter is dead and your dog has been raped, but with enough practice, I'm pretty sure it would be effective.

A suppressor would be the most effective way for home defense and ear safety. Too bad...

Gunfire in an enclosed room is painfully loud, it literally hurts. You will likely have trouble hearing for a while and depending on the individual you may incur permanent hearing loss to some degree.
Its better than being dead but its not something I'd like to go through.
Hooka has it right! If we weren't in CA a suppressor would be ideal for home defense use.

I have watched somewhere from the internet that shooting through a balloon full of water helps suppressing the sound. May have to try it someday.

If you have ever farted in a Bath tub, it's a little bit louder than that.

When the adrenaline is pumping many people experience a thing called auditory exclusion. Basically you don't hear anything until things calm down. Chances are you wont hear the shots at all when they happen. Depending on the size and acoustics of your house your hearing may never be the same after the fact. But honestly, a little permanent hearing loss is worth it considering the alternative.

Yes it will be very loud.
No at the time you will be running on so much adrenalin you wont feel the pain.
Depending on where you are in your house will also be a factor in how the sound waves come back and get you. A small area is much nastier than a big room.

MOST people will not have permanent hearing damage from a single shooting event. The temporary effect suck. Total loss of hearing, then buzzing, then ringing. When you get to the ringing part you probably are crashing from the adrenalin rush and might be too busy trying not to throw up all over the nice officer to notice at first. You might feel like the "shooting" ear feels stuffed up for a few days.

Something to think about: Remember with the Pew Pew starts, you have to plan on loosing a very important tactical advantage. You may not be able to hear anyone else in the house.
You, you, and you: Panic. The rest of you, come with me.

A few days ago I was at an outdoor range. I had taken off the ear protection during the cease fire. While walking toward the office, the line become hot again. I was about 15 feet behind the handgun shooters when they started firing. The sound was ear-splitting loud. My ears started to hurt by the time I got into the office. But luckily it went away pretty quickly.

That was outdoor, and 15 feet away. I can't imagine how painful it'd be to shoot a 12G inside a room.

So you guys are saying that the movies we watch are all false.
They shoot all the time indoors, inside cars, trains, houses, caves, tunnels, etc.
Then they continue carrying on with a normal conversation.
Thanks for ruining it for me.

You won't even hear it, because you're adrenaline will be pumping. Of all the animals I've shot with large caliber rifles, I never remember thinking "that was loud".

                              LOL, I'm sorry.

I thankfully have never shot from inside a car. I did train with a guy who did. He described it as this. "put your head inside a 50 gallon drum. Now have someone beat the drum with a sledgehammer." I will be very happy to go my entire life without experiencing that one. I understand that if you can get the barrel and action outside the window its not as bad.
