i shot outdoors in the forest once without ear protection with std 40 s&w. the first few shots were loud but not painful, after about round 4 my ears began ringing. once the mag was empty, i couldnt hear a thing and my ears hurt.

it took a good 15 minutes before i was able to hear normally but the ringing persisted noticeably for hours. a couple days later and it went away completely.

      this was all outdoors...

Some military combat vets should chime in. They're in these environments constantly. Most of my vet friends have good hearing still

              that

I've been shooting since I was a kid, I never started wearing hearing protection until I was an adult.

Back in 1984, I had a home invasion.

I defended my self with a 41 mag.

It was deafening and the muzzle blast and shock wave in that small bed room was mind blowing......pun intended!

                  Do you still have it?

.41 mag gets my vote for the most under rated round around.

You're kid's ears will be ringing for a while OP, but they'll be alive.

I guess it boils down to priorities. Staying alive or hearing loss. 45 is so loud even outdoors. Indoors is really loud. I stick with 9mm and a set of electronic muffs if I have time to put them on. I know a gun shop owner in alhambra and he shot and killed someone in 2004 with his AR and his hearing recovered despite firing 5 rounds. I once read that standard pressure 9mm will not cause permanent hearing damage.

I have had the experience of firing an AR-308 inside without hearing protection. I lost my hearing which lead to ringing. It took a while for my hearing to return to normal. Most pistols and shotguns may cause some ringing but nothing that I would be concerned about. It's the rifle cartridges that get you.

Many years ago, a LEO friend told me it was necessary for him to dispatch a deer severely injured by a car. He complained that he should have put some plugs in before pulling he trigger on his .357 (yeah, back in the day )...said his ears were ringing for days...and he was outside.

it will be painfully loud, but it won't matter if the shooting is justified

I keep electronic ears by my quick safe; if I have an extra second, I'll take it

with electronics on, I can hear clearly AND have protection, though I doubt I'll have that 2 extra seconds...
