How loud is shooting inside your house?

Might be a dumb question but say you do need to use your gun inside your house in self defense, say 3-5 shots, how will it affect your hearing? Every shooting I've done (at ranges) have required hearing protection so I've never experienced any indoor without it. Outside I have but I'd assume that's different. My main concern would be for my kids. I'd imagine its pretty loud but is it enough to cause serious damage? Right now I have a 9 and 40 but will be adding a 12 gauge soon.

Hope it never happens, especially with anyone home but all these Hollywood movies show no effect on the shooter lol. Just made me curious

    GREAT question...!

If I ever need to fire at unwanted intruder in my home... I'm gonna be DEAF...!

BUT... I'll be alive to tell you about it... in sign language

I am pretty sure firing 223/556 inside will permanently damage your hearing, 12 gauge, 9mm, 45, 40 will make your ears ring but won't do permanent damage.

Keep electronic ears with your firearm.

If they are in a room with a closed door, it probably wouldn't be damaging to your kids.

Just ask the intruder to wait until you get your softies stuffed in your ears.

            Safety first.

Focus on stopping the bad guy; your and your family hearing will be fine.

It will be louder than you can imagine.

Discussing the events with the police while your ears are ringing will not be pleasant.

Just wear them 24/7. Have a wire that makes it look like your listening to music.

Well, one way to know is go to the indoor range and take off your earmuffs. And can you report back on how loud it will be. Thanks

Not only will it be louder than you think, but it has the potential to affect your ability to communicate with your loved ones inside the house. My bedside firearm has a can attached for just that reason.

Yes, especially if your defensive gun is a long gun. They may also help you hear what's going on if you have to work through your house. Perhaps a flashlight also!

My only experience shooting without hearing protection was at an outdoor range once and I was shooting my H&K .45 (I forgot my ear plugs) I was freaking LOUD and very uncomfortable. I would not do that again. I can only imagine it would be way worse indoors. Like others have said, keep hearing protection near your gun, that's what I do.

Just shoot with one hand and plug the other ear so the damage only affects one side.
