Home Invasion.....

A house near by got broken into while the family was inside, with a pregnant daughter, wife and husband. The husband was held at gun point while the daughter and wife were raped. Now tell me, do you want more reasoning as to why I have a loaded firearm in my home for protection? And I live in a nice area. I feel sorry for people who DON'T have a firearm to protect themselves. And according to a LEO 15 or so homes around my area get broken into per week. Not sure if that includes occupied homes, but I'm not taking chances.

Also, with a wife and infant, I would do whatever it takes to protect them.

You are fairly new here so I will explain a little something to you. 99% of the folks on Calguns who have had to use a firearm for defense are not going to talk to you about it. Even if you are 100% correct in using your firearm and saved lives, it is still an extremely painful experience ( emotionally, morally, and/or legally). The tone of your post sounds like you are trolling for war stories.

OP, you won't find those of use who have used our weapons going about telling the stories. You might get someone telling of a scenario where they felt using one was imminent, but thats probably it.

You either have a gun(s) and are ready to defend your family and self, or you aren't - and you will find both camps here.

Not many here WANT to kill others. Shooting is always the last resort. The situation dictates the response. Unfortunately for everyone involved is that when someone breaks into your home, last resorts happen pretty fast in many cases.

I live in southern OC.

I have a client who suffered a home invasion. they tied the whole family up. When their eldest son drove up to visit as the invasion was taking place he spotted the driver for the get away car, who he knew. The driver was executed the very next day.

That was in huntington Beach. All participants to that case are doing life in Corcoran now.

I live further south. One night a guy tried to get into my house. I had no gun other than a 270 hunting rifle...(pre-calguns for me). My doors were locked and the dogs went nuts and he went down the street. My 4 year old daughter was asleep in her room.

The idiot finally found a door open. He ran into the house. He was naked with a samuri sword. He tried to decaptiate a woman who ran outside, he followed her...she ran back in and locked her door, and the police arrived quickly and subdued the nut case.

Would I have used a gun on a guy with a sword naked trying to kill me or my kid....

Gosh, let me think about that one for a while...

Three doors down a neighbor had a live in nanny who's brother in law took it upon himself to visit their house, tie up the nanny and a 12 year old, and rape them. He than went to his house to retrieve trash bags and duct tape to dispose of the evidence...the two women....he was spotted and fled to mexico, where he is still at large...

So things happen, humans are unpredictable creatures.

I was a boy scout, and they told us to be prepared. Not to be sheep or fanatics, but to be prepared.

I think one must always be vigilant. The rest will come naturally.

Never had to use my gun on a criminal yet, but I wouldn't hesitate if I had to.

I see a ton of threads talking about which gun to use in case of a home invasion, but I would like to know if this is even a major concern. Of course it's nice and all to have the peace of mind, but what are the chances? I mean how many of us here have had to USE a gun on somebody who broke into their house? Or better yet, will you be able to shoot and kill someone who happens to come inside or will you point the gun at them and tell them to get on the ground until the police arrive? Do you have the "killer instinct"...do you really?? Are you ready to deal with taking someones life if they were just a kid screwing around for fun?

I'm really wondering what the frequency of this situation is. I highly doubt many of us here have or ever will face this situation.

I'd love to hear from people who have faced this situation....anybody??

I think you are seriously misguided in the amount of home invasions that happen. You will notice that the news stations typically only showcase stories that happen with mass shootings, or events where a gun was used for a robbery or murder that *doesn't include protection. Say what you will, but there is a nationwide biased in regards to gun that is portrayed in media.

Oh those all happened this year btw. And that was defense with an AR. Let alone most people own handguns or shotguns for defense.

Why would someone ever take the chance of not owning a gun for that situation in which they depend on OTHER people for their safety. Wait 10 mins for the police at the best case scenario? Hope on peoples good faith that they won't try to break in and potentially hurt my family? No thanks.

Just last night I had my guns in my safe when I heard a strange noise my girl friend said and woke me up from ... How do you think I felt that my gun was in my safe and the only form of safety I had on me if a group of people came in was a flashlight near my night stand.

Which makes me think it is so stupid to require guns when not in use to be locked up and ammo locked up separately ... how stupid (not a CA law yet, but in certain states they are trying to pass bills similar to that).

Anyways end of my rant ... and yes I would feel bad that I had to shoot someone, and it is not a situation I dream of and certainly not the situation I ever want to face. But if it came down to it, I would not hesitate to fire my gun at someone if it meant protecting the life of myself or my loved ones.

Still kind of a poorly worded question. I suggest you start off here on page 8 "Use of Lethal Force In Self-Defense" http://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/ag...f/cfl2013.pdf?

It's your almost instantaneous evaluation of the situation that allows you to decide if lethal force is justified (you'd better be right) to stop a threat. And your goal should be stopping the threat only. If the unfortunate result is the death of the intruder, so be it.

And make sure you thoroughly understand the section "Limitations on the Use of Force in Self-Defense" because "The right of self-defense ceases when there is no further danger from an assailant." That means if the perp is down, no gun in his hand and no longer able to attack you, you can't continue shooting him!

So perhaps you're wondering if CalGuns folks have carefully considered if they are willing to use lethal force to save themselves and their family from death or serious physical injury. If that's your question, then, Yes, yes I have carefully considered it and I am.
