Does that range by the airport allow Wolf ammo as well? Sorry to hear about Agoura Hills Range. I had a good time shooting there.

Well, there's talk about re-opening the pistol side in the near future (1-2 weeks?). Call before you come though! Also, apparently, a customer saw my post here about the posibility of a tracer being fired and then confronted two other employees there and told them he was mad at me because he knew I was talking about him firing a tracer. To be honest, I had/have no idea if it was a tracer or who could have fired it. I had left the building 4-5 hours before the fire and I was only there for a few minutes. Well, it's appartent that someone must be feeling a bit guilty about this. Otherwise, he wouldn't have taken it so personally. I don't know what else to say except, I didn't even know who it could have been until the other employees told me about their conversation with him and, by posting the info that I had at the time, I wasn't trying to out anyone, just inform everyone of the situation.

That's like saying, how did a convicted felon get a gun in the 1st place. just because it's illegal doesn't mean people won't break the law!

Tracer ammo isn't really that hard to come across. I bought a sealed case of WWII surplus .303" British ammo many years ago from Sherwood International (Long since OOB) and when I cracked it open, along with the 20 boxes of .303" Mk VIIIz Ball were 4 boxes of .303" tracer. I got rid of it somehow, but in retrospect, it was a case of military ammo and was probably intended for the Vickers MMG , as the standard load for tracer to ball was one in five.

So to bring back the point, it is out there, and sometimes you just stumble upon it by accident.

                  CSACANNONEER:

I have been shooting and collecting guns for 25 years. I have been a regular at Agoura shooting range for 12 years. I had a relationship with the owners and employees and would never do anything to jeopardize that. I know, as well as everyone else, that tracers are illegal in CA and someone would have to be a complete idiot to shoot one in an indoor range. I think that when the report from the fire investigators comes back, it will show that it wasn’t a tracer at all.

You said, “To be honest, I had/have no idea if it was a tracer or who could have fired it.” Yet, in your 8/30/08 post you say, “ we can thank a fellow Calgunner (I think, but without proof, I can’t out him).” For someone that “left the building 4-5 hours before the fire” you sure seem to have a lot of facts. The only thing that is “apparent” is that I was being prematurely and unfairly blamed. Conclusions were drawn and people, including you, were talking about it. Several people have called to tell me. Anyone would want to defend themselves under such circumstances. The fire started 2 hours after I left. Watch the tape. Your use of the word “guilty” only shows that you want to keep stirring the pot. It’s a shame that you no longer have your job but, I suggest you find another way to get attention.

It saddens me that you and others at the range would be so quick to point the finger without knowing the facts.

                  Chuck

Yes but believe me, I could come across an illegal gun in my hood much easier than tracer rounds!

And it would be rather obvious if someone shot one in an indoor range I'd think.

I have been doing the gun thing(and ran a range) for many years and rarely if ever came across tracers or saw tracers being shot/attemped to being shot.

Anyone remember Hornady made handgun tracer rounds that supposedly did not burn hot? Vector?

There have been many instances where ammo has been linked and sold at gun shows and it contains one or more unmarked tracer rounds. The shooter may not even know it's there. BTW, I have two cases of 12 gauge 7 1/2s tracer rounds in my garage! Didn't you all know that tracer rounds for shotguns are perfectly legal in this state?

About the info that I've posted in this thread, I know more than I need to post here. I was even present and accompanied the arson investigator while he was on the premises. All the info/speculation that I've posted has come dirrectly from the owners, two of which were present at the time of the fire. I posted info about the fire to keep everyone informed and when it comes to blame, I have never pointed a finger at anyone either publicly or privately. I'm sorry that anyone feels the need to defend themself. The funny thing is there were reports of people inside the range smelling smoke for a couple of hours before the alarm went off. But, after initial investigations, the smells were believed to be coming from Wood Ranch BBQ. Even after the FD responded, it took them well over an hour to find the source of smoke and heat.

The good news is that there is still talk about re-opening the non-rubber side for handgun and .22lr rifles. I'll let everyone know if this happens. Or, should I just not post anything else about this as at least one member wants?

I have seen ammo for sale where every 4th/5th round was pulled from the belts because it was a tracer. I knew tracer shotgun ammo was legal but didn't even think to mention it. I used to see it for sale in like Shotgun News, sold as a training aid.

Not every colored bullet tip is tracer of course but any cartrdiges found with a colored bullet tip if milsurp should be researched. I remember having some yellow tip 7.62x54r and being concerned it could be tracer but IIRC that is just heavy ball MG ammo.

Any further news on the range? Did the Fire Dept. report state exactly what caused the fire?

                            Any news on them reopening?

I've known two of the owners for more years that I can count (20+). They are neighbors of mine and really decent people. I've spent a lot of time shooting at that range and have fond memories of good times with friends and of meeting other gun enthusiasts. It breaks my heart to see them lose their livelihood due to pressure from landlords, accident or customer stupidity. Our options for shooting in southern california are already very limited and regardless of what happened it's a shame to see another shooting range go extinct.

I wish all the owners the best of luck and hope they can find a way to continue in the firearm industry. Instead of pointing fingers and placing blame, perhaps we should all take a minute to thank the people that choose to try and provide us with choices to buy guns in this, the most gun unfriendly state in the union.

Anyone on this forum wanna go through the miles of paperwork and endless BS of trying to secure a location to open another Indoor Shooting range?

OK, here's the scoop, The range will never be open again! Now the other news. If all goes as planned, the shop portion of the store will remain open until Dec. 1 2008.

Now for the big news! Since the range will not reopen, the range guns are going on sale starting tomarrow morning (10-11-08) at 10am! There are some great deals on some well used guns. There's a shelf full of Glocks ranging in price from $365-$425 and other deals as well. It will be first come first serve with no reservations being taken. Also, all ammo is marked down 20% and other merchandise mark downs will vary. If you need targets, come in tommarrow and I'll give you 2 for 1. That's about it. Oh yea, I think it will be busy tomarrow so, please don't call just to verify this info. Stop by instead!
