So, when does one become a collector?

It's in all hobbies it seems and guns are no different. Once you have a certain number of an item your considered a collector

How many widgets does a person need to be a "collector" What about a "hoarder"

When I was a kid I always thought, when I grow up I want to be a firearm hoarder

When you have more unfired guns than fired, collector status achieved.

When you have multiples of the same gun, unfired and all the accoutrements to go with , NIP, your a hoarder.

When you buy your third gun safe I'd say you're a collector.

I'd guess it's when you start buying guns you don't need and won't use for aesthetic or historical reasons.

Quantity is not the issue, it's all about whether or not you use them.

Hmmm, but then you would leave collector status by just taking some of your unfired guns to the range... Doesn't seem right.

I've bought my 3rd gun safe, buts its been more of moving from smaller to larger. Now everything (barely) fits into my giant 650LB Liberty safe. Not sure if that makes me a collector or not....

This sounds probably the best to me.

A collection of US battle rifles of the 20th century could be as few as four:
                  A 1903
                  A Garand
                  A M14/M1A
                  &
                  A M16/AR15
And that would be a nice collection

When you talk to someone about your guns and part of your description is this is one of X numbers made and I purchased it because it has this barely noticeable feature that I paid hundreds of extra dollars for just so I can post pictures on the Internet and believe that I am a superior gun owner compared to the scores of other people at the range with their glock 17's, $800 1911's and ar15 with 6 pounds of extra crap hanging from it.

I don't know at what point one becomes a "collector." I can tell you, however, the point at which you have an "arsenal." It is 11.

                            11 Guns = Arsenal...per my Significant Other.

And sadly, given how she seems to feel about me having an "Arsenal," I'm not very optimistic about ever achieving "Collector" status. Then again, I've never been accused of being a good listener.

It's when you buy guns for something other than how well they shoot. The thing could pattern like a shotgun at 10 yds but hey now, it has xyz serial number which means its rare bla bla bla LOL

                              I fit this description.
