    Ammo Count

I've never really physically counted all the ammo I have on hand, just a rough estimate (S-W-A-G). Is it worth my time to actually count it all? I have very little loose ammo, most of it is on clips, packets or boxes.

You don't have enough ammo if you are even considering a detailed inventory. Just order more when you get down to your last case.

Would be fun to try and count loose rounds in ammo cans.

Count 10 and weigh them, then weigh the loose ammo. You should be able to get within 1 or 2 of whats in the box.

I counted my ammo once. I was depressed for a month afterwards.

Was it because you had too much or too little??

I count it when I load it or buy it.

Soon as I get home from the store, or finish at the reloading bench, I empty everything into ziplock backs with 100 rounds in each, then all I have to do is count bags(and this weekend I will be setting up a spreadsheet to keep an inventory). Only exception is .22lr, it just goes into gallon ziplock bags and that's how I think of it, no idea how many rounds per bag.

i track via a spreadsheet particularly the match ammo broken down by which brand/grain i use. the bulk ones like .223 sportsman guide, i guesstimate based on what's left in the box and how many boxes left unopened.

pistol... i'm too lazy to count even if via weighing (mostly bulk). shotgun, i can see the boxes.

but as i purchase new ammo, regardless if pistol, i put in a spreadsheet now. i count usage at the range but i wasn't doing inventory before.

I haven't started reloading yet, so keeping count for me is easy. Ammo stays in the packaging it came in until it gets loaded into the magazine at the range. It makes it easier to grab exactly what I want for the day.

That being said, I know within 20+- how many rounds I have for each caliber I own.

I use the iPhone app AmmoBase to track my ammo count and also the # of rounds thru each firearm. The app also let's you track cost $$.

I bag all my loose ammo up into 100 round bags. Any bags with less than 100 rounds get labeled with a round count. Makes it easy to see how much I have on hand.

I just added a small dry erase board to the outside door of my safe for a round count. Some are approximate numbers but close.

You can never have too much ammo.
