question on proper range etiquette

I had that problem shooting the semi pistol. While its funny to see your buddies ducking the brass. I had a older gentleman not in our group, tell me the 50ae brass was hitting him. He just asked me to use one of the screens the range supplies ( Sunnyvale rod and gun). No problems, and everyone was happy.

I wouldn't enjoy it but I wouldn't complain if I was the getting hit. The range is just poorly designed if that happens. The range in Lincoln has screens that roll down in between shooters for people that are shooting semi's It's very nice, cheap, and easy to construct. IMO there is no excuse for a range not to have something like that.

The "big bad gun is too loud" excuse is already used at some ranges as a reason to ban 50s from them. Yes, other shooters do complain about other people's noise.

Who was there first?

I had a guy come and pick the table to the right of me when I was shooting an AR. He set up a spit shined spotless precision bolt action gun... and then complained about my brass hitting his gun. I told him he should have considered that when he picked that table. Nothing more was said.

I do pay more attention to where my FAL flings brass, since the spent case from my FAL serves a secondary projectile, even with the gas way open.

Suggested etiquette:

- if you arrived later than the person being hit by brass, try to
move to another shooting position (depends on crowding) to
get a tad of isolation;

- if the person hit by brass arrived after you were shooting,
the brass is his problem;

This applies to more formal sit-down bench range use.

If it's on a "tin can alley" range where unstructured-but-safe semi-rapid fire is allowed, then all bets are off. Dude should turn up the collar on his shirt, wear a hat, etc.

From a combat shooting standpoint: Hot brass is what it is. I had to send one of my Marines to see a doctor (not a corpsman) because of a burn he got on the range. To his credit he still shot expert.
At the range is a different story...If I get hit with a .308 brass and dude says sorry or at least acknowledges the fact he hit me with his hot brass then I'm usually good. It is indeed all about attitude and respect as Luv44Mag said. On the other hand maybe the person that is complaining about getting hit with your brass has all of about 2 rounds through the weapon that he just bought at Big5 and has no idea what he is doing or where he is. More than likely an apology (or at least an excuse me) is in order. If you are the one being hit with the brass maybe you can let the person know politely that you don't like being hit with very hot pieces of flying metal that may or may not have sharp edges and ask them politely if everyone can come up with a good all around solution.

If you really want to have some fun, set up to the right of someone shooting a semi-auto, and start tossing .38 or .357 brall over the barrier to the left...

All semi's fling brass. Getting hit happens. That's why I wear a hat whenever I'm on the range as well as a crew neck collar t-shirt. Yes, I've been hit in the ams, neck and face with brass, I have the burns to prove it and was treated for a small second degree burn when I went to work on the following Monday. No big deal. Unless we outlaw all semi-automatic handguns and rifles flying brass will happen and expected when on the range.

It's a range you are going to get hit by brass, I have had people ask me not to shoot my .44 mag because of being hit by the carbon that fly's out of the cylinder. Some of my bud's even complain about getting hit by brass flying from other shooters, even from me. I just laugh at the little girliemen who can't handle the hot brass. If you can't take the heat get the out of the kitchen.

The first complainer was on the 50 yard line, I was there first he came shortly after. He set up a screen to protect himself shortly before I moved to the tin can range where I encountered the second complainer. I was 3-4 bays over, most of my brass was falling behind him but I guess the occassional piece would hit him. He asked me a few times if I could lean forward more hoping that the built in screens would block the brass but obviously it was tossing over the screen without a problem.

Whenever I set up I always look to see who is shooting what and possition myself accordingly. Yesterday at the range I saw a short barreled M1A with a muzzle break on a bench so I made sure to set up far away from that one.
