    question on proper range etiquette

So I was at the rifle range the other day and had a two other shooter complain about my brass hitting them. One guy handed me a .223 shell and said "this hit me in the neck"

One of the complainers was shooting an M1 Garand which was also throwing brass all over the place.

So my question is, am I responsible for where my brass lands or should other shooters be aware that they are at a shooting range which will have hot brass and other things should take steps to protect themselves from it?

Edited to add: Sorry for posting it the wrong forum, how do I move it?

Most public ranges will offer the use of brass deflectors. You could also make one of your own with some pvc and window screen. Sometimes taking a step forward helps, but yeah, other people should be aware of and expect flying brass to hit them once in a while. It's part of the experience I guess. If you were there first, they should have known to avoid setting up next to the semi-auto shooters. Personally I use a deflector, and never complain when I'm hit once in awhile.

Tell em' to turn in their man card and STFU.

Seriously, it's a range. What's next? The big bad gun is too loud?

Some guns do fling brass to an insane distance, so moving away doesn't help that much. It just makes it so that one guy has to take up like five shooting stations, and that can be an issue when it is crowded. Most ranges (including the Los Altos Rod and Gun Club) have brass catchers/deflectors for your use. Just find one of those, set it up, and let the people who can't handle getting anywhere near flying brass have their fun too. It's really not that big of a deal either way.

I think person who is shooting the semi-auto is responsible for the brass.
If you think the brass out of your weapon can hit the person who is next lane of yours... you need to setup the brass deflactor or brass catcher.

Reminds me of the time that a guy next to me was shooting a CETME and his brass was hitting me consistently. I collected his brass and handed it to him when he was leaving. He looked at me, nodded and left a baggie of cleaning patches on my table and waved me goodbye. Be responsible and make sure that you are away from people when shooting a brass chucker. Also, you might want to use a brass deflector if it is a crowded range, but yeah, it is part of the process.

i own a mini14 and sks and they fling brass like nobodys business
ive never had any complaints on brass hitting other shooters. i have gotten a stare or two but nothing more... i say anyone who complains is a pssy!!!

however, if there is a father and son shooting next to me i'll move a couple lanes down or switch rifles to let them enjoy the day

                            Yeah, what Stanze said!!

And just to quantify it some, I have taken hot .308 and .223 brass on my sweaty neck where it stuck and left a fat welt. Did I enjoy it, heck no!, but it is pretty much part of the experience. It is kind of like going to your Kung Fu class and complaining to the instructor that someone kicked you in the nuts. Be neighborly for sure, but in the same respect if you cannot take the heat you'd best get the heck out of the kitchen.
