My 870 express is a piece of crap. It jams every once and a while and rusts every time you look at it. I'd sooner use my .22 for HD.

I guess I may have lucked out w/my recent 870 Express. Picked it up from Big 5 a few months ago on sale. It's the one piece extended mag tube 18" HD version... or "Security" as Big 5 calls its.

I've shot hundreds of the 'cheap' Winchester white box target loads, Winchester rifled slugs, military buck, and the Federal LE133. No issues whatsoever in everything. Chamber seems good from my normal cleaning... smooth and nothing gets snagged. I wipe it down with an oily rag and keep it in a Shotlock near the bathroom and haven't had any rust issues either.

My biggest concern is that its going to get the job done, in a pinch. No jams.

Then, as previously advised, read the "New Barrels" section at http://www.aiptactical.com/Page_2.html, follow the instructions, and your concern will be allayed.

Get a used police trade in. Theyre much better quality with all steel parts, trigger pack, and smooth butter like actions with a better parkerizing. Trust me, you're going to end up spending money on replacing the furniture anyway so go for a better base gun and build from there.

The problem with "I hear they have QC issues" or "mine didn't work well" or "Mine hates this ammo or that" is as with any $400 gun you will have some issues when you make thousands of them. Even the top of the line Benelli can and does have issues from time to time and they make way less of those.

I have the 870 Tactical and have well over 1000 rounds through mine. My son used it this past weekend shooting clays all day.

Some will have cycling issues right out of the box. Run a 100 shells through and many will go away.

I have two ARs, three XD 9mm, and two Semi-Auto 12ga in the safe. My 870 is in the closet.

                      Good luck . ..

I have two 870s and not one problem with mine and have shot 600 or 700 rounds.

My 870 operates flawlessly ! It was built in the 70 s
I would ask want do you want the gun to do ?

If your going for trap, skeet, sporting clays etc ! The 870 will do a fine job with different chokes and the racking of a slide does tend to terrify any would be gremlins.

All competition favors self loaders ! All serious self defense favors self loaders !
It's the self loaders the legislature dislikes the most .

My advice is to buy a self loader and you have a gun that will do everything !
The knob creek " jungle walk " was won 2 years straight with a Remington 1100 series .
He had extended mag, side saddle shell carrier, and an orange day glow front sight !
