He had a gun so why not? That situation couldn't have gone any better.

If he had any kind of tactical awareness he would not have opened the door. What he did was stupid. He got lucky.

That's a ridiculous notion. He's former LEO, so he'd be fine.

to the people who say not to open the door are just silly. you might as well be on the other team that will just hide in a corner call 911 and wait for the government to come and take care of you. take charge of your own life and dont let bad people dictate your actions. you dont have to be leo or former leo to be prepared.

One thing to be prepared but another thing not to exercise restraint. Just because we may be experieince/trained to deal with certain situations likes these doesn't mean we are in the clear to act. The stand your ground line becomes fuzzy in these situations where self preservation could have been avoided long before lethal force is used.

I think him going outside to chase the car was where he pushed that line too far, but everything else was fine.

First thing I noticed in this thread is the comments questioning how many guns and what kind. I Guess because he is a retired Officer, trying to find fault with him. Guys, watch the video, listen to the man, he explains what happened, why he fired and what guns he used. Besides him protecting himself and his wife, he insinuated something we have all been saying for years.

"I've never taken a gun off a criminal that was registered to the criminal".

He obviously didn't want the door to be damaged by the bat and knew what he was going to do as soon as he took his first step towards the front door.

I agree, but, won't condemn him for it...look at his area, his surroundings, he seems to be living in a very peaceful community, and, although he wasn't going to leave anything for chance, it could've just as easily have been a stranded motorist or something

when we ask the question as to why he opened the door, I think we are limiting ourselves from the true nature of the video...I've been known to water my lawn at 3:00 am in the morning where I live...I feel comfortable doing it, but, that doesn't mean I'm not taking some type of chance in doing it

maybe, before opening the door, I would ask who is there, but, he did whatever he did by his own decision, it's still not the point of the video...the real issue was, we, as law abiding people, keeping in tack, our ability to protect ourselves from a threat...hell, maybe he was better off opening the door and taking care of business...much better than them returning at some other time and busting through a window, hoping to catch him off guard

by god, they are on his property, he should have every right to find out what they want...if he chooses to open up his door, that's on him...I wouldn't do it like that, but, he did, and, maybe he's even learned it might not always be the wisest decision...they could've bum rushed him just as he opened the door and it might have been a problem for him to react, we'll never know...good video though, enjoyed not only the story, but, his beliefs too

                          this gets a 2

oh, and, before anyone mentions it, I do have a sprinkler system sometimes I just enjoy going out there to water the lawn myself

The asking why he opened his door sounds like victim blaming. Why did he open the door? Why was she dressed like that? Why was he carrying that much cash?
