My only question is why is he opening the door that late at night, especially to an unknown party? Glad he's ok.

Considering his lengthy career in law enforcement, his training/experience and the fact he was armed and mentally "ready" to use his firearm, I'd say he was quite comfortable (and prepared) answering/opening the door.

Darwinism award for the perp who had previously been in his house as an exterminator. Maybe he should have paid better attention to all the signs this was a cop's house.

Just imagine if ever house was armed, wonder how many burglars would change their plans.

He never said he fired at the vehicle, he said he pointed his gun at it when the backup lights came on and then the driver sped away.
