Why the 22lr shortage ?

Well It is actually pretty simple. There are a bunch of people out there that have more money then brains. They will pay $65+ dollars for 500 round of 22lr when it used to cost $20. And people with no life and buy and sell ammo for a living now go out and buy every drop of 22 they can find so they can resell it to the brain dead person with more money then brains who will pay the ridiculous mark up because there is no 22 on the shelf due to this vicious circle. How to solve the problem, well if you have a brain dead friend or you suffer from brain damage, Stop the madness! If you stop buying the crap from these people it will in fact appear on the shelf again. Don't believe me, look at all the ammo there is at walmart and other vendors as well as gun store locations now.

It is a real bummer to see the frenzy spread when we used to be able to go out plinking on a whim. Now it is a big production to scrape together ammo weeks in advance. Of course there are plenty of people willing to charge me double like you mentioned, but doing that just feeds the beast.

The flippers only exist because of the buyers willing to pay their prices. As soon as the buyers stop paying $80 for a bulk pack of .22lr, the flippers will stop selling it for $80, then eventually quit buying it up at the store because they aren't making any money re-selling it.

As far as why .22lr is so hard to find?

Cheap(usually)
Easy to store and transport in bulk(you can have 10k rounds of .22lr sitting on a small shelf not taking up much space. Can't say the same for 10k rounds of .308).
Not reloadable(Well, I know there are some dies out there, but I don't think there's a way to re-use the brass at all).

So after all of the 5.56, .308, 7.62x39, 9mm, .45, etc. disappeared from store shelves, people just bought up all of the .22lr. Besides, it's not like ammo just "goes bad" in a short period of time. 5,000 rounds of .22lr would only last you 5 years, if you only shot 1000 rounds a year. There are people who shoot 500+ rounds in a single trip to the range. It's not as if having thousands of rounds of .22lr on hand is some massive arsenal(even though the media would flip out if they knew what people actually kept in their personal inventory), so there's no reason not to buy tons of .22lr. People just need to stop paying the stupid prices.

Or if you want to build up a good stock you just do what people used to do. Buy a couple hundred rounds, save 50 every time you go out shooting. Before you know it you have a good amount stocked up and you got to buy and shoot on the same day.

It's sold out nationally. My buddy is a distributor and is moving product. Consumers are just hoarding it the first chance they get, as soon as its in stock.

We have a guy at work that spends all his vacation time camping the same Big 5 once a week. He must have a hundred thousand rounds now. Sad thing is he only owns a 10-22 that he shot two times all last year. Its turned psychological for him now. Now its about not letting the other guy get it first.

But last week, went to Vegas , and in loose Vegas, they were out of 22lr ammo.

ahhhh... maybe you just did not hit the right stores maybe? I bought ammo at 2 different locations... last week. And at my own store, there's around 40 bricks of Gemtech subsonic sitting on the shelf right now. (I took home a whole case already)

You have to get way far from the touristy areas. We have .22 ammo. Lots

I've purchased over 16000 rounds of long rifle since I moved here in June.

Go look in the rim fire section and see the dickbags with 100,000 rounds of .22lr and you'll see why there's none on the shelves.

Right, because there's so many people in the rimfire section bragging about having 100,000 rounds that they've recently amassed and it most certainly isn't a stockpile they've been building over the past few decades which wouldn't have affected you anyway.

The increase in demand is a direct result of bad policies. I hope and I think 22s will be commonly available again next year. Seems the manufacturers are doing their part.

People are buying it and reselling it and people buy from those resellers so that's part of it, people know it's in demand so they buy whatever they see and hoard it.

You guys might not like my idea when it comes to "flippers" " resellers" or what ever else you call these types, I was at a gun show recently and there was a guy there selling .22s he had a wagon full of WalMart 22s says he camps out there on delivery day and buys it all up to resell it at the gunshow, the IRS should be there to ask this turd if he is paying taxes on the capitol gains he is making , maybe if they hit a few turds like him it would end their new found business, I mean even wally world pays taxes on what they sell, now you can start bashing me IRDC

No "hoarding" here... I just stop by a few places on the way home from work a couple nights a week, and buy a box or a brick if it's there.

There have been a lot more .22lr gun designs unloaded on the market in recent years so more people are buying .22lr now. Even 5 years ago you were very limited on firearms that shot .22lr.
