I'm wondering the same thing. Luckily I haven't had to buy any, I just gave some away in fact to someone that couldn't find any.

Maybe they aren't making as much to keep resources for larger calibers?

They are manufacturing more .22 lr than ever before. According to Remington, CCI, etc., they are running their plants 24/7. It's (compared to centerfire) cheap, and everyone is hoarding it. If people were simply buying what they shoot or normally keep around, it would still be everywhere. And BTW, it's not just a California thing, I'm in NC and there's none on the shelves here (long) either.

based on what ive heard and by guessing the ammo companies are still trying to fill back orders from the sandy hook panic back in 2012. that and the preppers/ resellers grabbing it all and selling for 200% mark up. best thing to do in go online and put your name on some back order list.

It's not just California. I haven't seen so much as a single box on the shelf in over a year. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that you can't reload .22 and it's still the cheapest round to shoot.

I was in AZ for Christmas, no .22 LR.

              Simple answer. Greed and panic.

I see . So this shortage is prevalent all over, and not limited to Calif.

                Nevada is out too.

                This is weird.

I think it is getting worse, used to be able to buy bulk pack off cabelas atleast once a week from summer -fall. Now not so much luck since October. I don't even bother with Walmart, the resellers already know the shipment times and clean the shelfs of .22lr in minutes.

However I was able to get minimags at Turners last Sunday at 4:30 pm, they were keeping behind the counter and I think tring to sell to those that bought a firearm.

I am still kicking myself in the butt for reselling the little 22 lr I had. fwiw the guy asked if he could buy it off me and I let him name the price. He gave me $3 per 50...even after I told him I had paid $2 per 50. The went home and checked the resale market...I actually felt good I didn't gauge like that. Figured that guy could have fun with his gf who had just gotten a 22 lr rifle.

I also had assumed, as this was when other calibers started showing back up and dropping in price, that 22 lr would follow suit. I have been disappointed

I was back in Ireland, lots of Eley 22lr for sale there, no shortage, I wonder if Canada has no shortage?
                        WTB Irish firearms:
old SxS shotguns, Enfields (Irish contract or FF marked), RIC marked carbines or revolvers, odd ball flintlocks.

VZ58 PARTS F/S - I've got everything except magazine parts

Does Ireland have a comparable number of shooters to the US when you compare say... number of shooters per 100,000 people?

Is .22lr normally cheap in Ireland compared to most centerfire like it is in the US?

Was it the cheaper Eley Sport, or the more expensive Eley Match or Tenex that you can still find in stock fairly easily in the US?

Was it a normal amount on shelves compared to before the panic buying started in the US?

There could be any number of reasons why .22lr happened to be available.

I saw a box of 550 22lr at the Reno gun show for $67. That guy can pound sand for that much.
